Here in Reality Land, AOPA has consistently fought to keep the price of flying down while at the same time making it more accessible for everybody. I guess you were thrown off by the fact that annual dues have stayed at $39 (what a princely sum :rolleyes:) during the entire tenure of Boyer's presidency. Don't worry about it though, you're a big bad Airline Pilot. |

AOPA from their airport support volunteers all the way up to Boyer himself have historically been all about keeping flying affordable, and not overly burdoned with excess regulations and fees. If you're trying to judge an entire organization by only one of their several magazines, then you just don't get it, and aren't worth the time to try and explain it. I guess boating magazine only caters to the rich since the majority of their reviews are on the newest products as well, which tend to be more expensive than older used boats... or perhaps the NRA only caters to the rich, since guns cost so much new... are you for real? OR, was that just flame bait? |

Let's face it; it's a widely accepted scabbing; if you don't fly the banner for $12 a load, some other cat will...that schmo might even do it for free. Isn't that where it all starts? The average Joe can not afford to fly for fun like he use to be able to in the late 70's and through the 80's. I have a plane and I can't afford to fly it. Once I am done with the maintenance and the storage fees I am lucky if I can get up for an hour a month. Have you ever looked at the price for an interior plastic piece for a Cessna? Why does a part for an airplane cost 5 times as much as the same part I can go buy at NAPA? (I partly know the answer to this question but it is one example of how GA is pricing itself out of the market). This year I am not renewing my AOPA fees. Maybe it is selfish of me but I feel even without AOPA we'd be in the same situation we are in right now. I'm going to use my money instead to buy 8 gallons of AvGas.
I don't own an aircraft but I had been a member of the AOPA since '01 when I started flying. I canceled my membership this year and will not be renewing again. I LOVE the ASF!!! But the AOPA has gone down hill in my opinion. I use to donate to the AOPA, their PAC and ASF (still do the ASF). [thread] Well written article, thanks Mark. OO. |
