Colgan may not be at the Miami job fair

So I talked to Karen this morning and she said the company might not be there because they're not planning to hire. Hope this help anyone planning to go there.

What Upgrade? I don't see any upgrades here! :D

Seriously though, they cancelled the last upgrade class with no more in sight.

I really feel bad for all of the FO's! That pay is crap. Hopefully ALPA will come to the rescue with a pay bump for you guys. Has their been much open time lately

brewpilot 01-08-2009 07:12 PM

Well let's see? As of a couple of days ago, there was about 40+ hrs of just FO opentime. I hope alpa gets us a bump up in pay. Word around here is that there hasn't been a pay raise in like 5 years or so. But I can't complain, I still have a job and I wish all the best to everyone on the furlough bus!

dingo222 01-09-2009 07:01 AM

saab fo's got a $3 hr raise 2 years ago. saab captains are the ones who have not seen a raise in 5 years

usmc-sgt 01-10-2009 03:25 AM

Im looking forward to year 3 FO pay...now there is a bump to look forward to. .36 cents per seat, raise ticket prices by .08 cents per seat and we can get paid at least industry standard.

Im looking forward to the contract talks. I have a senior xjet fo friend at my crashpad who tells me the highlights of his contract and it is pretty impressive in most aspects.

What the hell is going on with these FO grade reports. Absoultly stupid. Glad there is not captain grades.

flyguyniner11 01-10-2009 08:53 AM

a new FO evaulation progam SB is starting for FO's during their first year they have to get evaulated by one capt a month, i dont think its a bad idea, takes about 30 seconds to fill out the form

Oh,I think that is a good idea. Other airlines have these and it is a good training tool. I would be upset if it were for all FO's. Since your first year is a probation period, it makes since.

flyguyniner11 01-10-2009 10:11 AM

it might be beneficial for experianced fo's to do it for new capts, althought i dunno if that would go over so well

There are some Street CA's that I would love to do one for

IQuitEagle 01-10-2009 10:29 AM

I was actually surprised when I was at Colgan that there were no probationary reports on new FOs.

However, reports such as these are not the proper form of handling underperforming crew members. It is just another way of management trying to get crew members to rat on one another and do their dirty work for them.

As you will soon find now that you have ALPA, the best way to handle difficult or dangerous crew members is through Pro Standards. Use it. It's good and effective, and keeps the company out of it, unless the situation really and truly warrants it.

flyguyniner11 01-10-2009 11:40 AM

Haha typical post!!

When any airline offers you a job you really have to look at the whole picture. Not just the current upgrade. An fo at colgan still has a good chance at upgrading relatively quickly at the expense of short term income. They could have been at other places making more with more time off... any choice you make is a gamble.

It is a weird situation. If I had gone to another carrier instead of Colgan I may have been furloughed. If not furloughed, close to the bottom of the list. At least I have some seniority here to get schedules I want with weekends off. So yes the pay sucks, especially since I will be rocking 3rd year FO pay here in a few months. But I am glad to have a job right now with a pilot group who voted in a union, we can start to make things better.

JoeyMeatballs 01-10-2009 12:22 PM

Sounds cheesy but I saved all of my F/O Effectiveness reports from my first year at Expressjet, I am going to bring them along on an y future interviews :)

We have them at Eagle. Probationary pilot reports. Actually they work out pretty good for the FO. If you get into trouble they can really help you out. They pull them out at the probationary check and factor what is in there into keeping you or not. Suppose you had a few missed assignments and a big old load of 'good grades' - might be beneficial to you. The unfortunate thing is they aren't required at Eagle...so we have to beg to get them filled out many times. 1 a month would be great. I think I have 5 in my file.

It lets them know, from the Captains point of view, what kind of pilot you are and if you're a good employee for the company to retain.

Does this surprise anyone considering how fat we are on FOs after we just hired like 50 guys? I wish they'd tell us what the heck is goin on and why they suddenly decided to add 10% more pilots when everyone else is furloughing. Wasn't there supposed to be some new United flying that was "almost finalized" (according to buddy)? If the hiring is for the Q... it still doesn't make sense because that is at least a year or two away (supposedly.)

captain152 01-10-2009 06:57 PM

I think those "progress reports" are a very good idea for new FOs (and some street captains as Juice pointed out). It will let people know how their coming along and what they can improve upon. And, unless you just fly with a completely horrible CA (very few here at Colgan IMHO), you're going to get a report from someone that you actually like and respect (hopefully) that can help you out along the way.

I'm with you Kalyx ... no idea why we hired so many guys. The last upgrade class that went through in Dec just finished up and are on IOE/taking their fed ride. I'm really hoping that we get some good news on the Q's soon!! On that note, I'm hoping all the airlines get good news soon!!!
