You experience on the line since the USAir Crash

I've been off for a couple days and I'm just curious to see what going on out there. Are you guys noticing any difference with the passengers? More nervous flyers? People paying attention to the announcements? People looking at younger pilot sand wondering if you are capable? What are you guys seeing out there since this event?

Go!

saxman66 01-16-2009 06:02 PM

Nothing from me. I was just hoping no one would say anything to me about it when it was on TV early this morning at the hotel lobby. A few other passengers were there waiting to take the van too, and thankfully they didn't ask me about my analysis on how it happened. I didn't feel like talking about it.

withthatsaid182 01-16-2009 06:05 PM

I was commuting today on USAir and a passenger came up and asked me what I would have done, what I thought, are we trained for that, and said he heard that it had happened previously in 1967...

I just said they did a good job, I'd try to do what they did, sure they train us and 196-turn off CNN.

People will get over it in 3 weeks...

Ive gotten questions about what happens when a bird hits an engine...

Chops it up
Cooks it
Spits it out

... they loved it. :D

mjarosz 01-16-2009 07:38 PM

They seemed a little nicer today. We left LGA yesterday around 6:15 - under 2 hrs late - and the captain made an announcement about our aircraft's latest in anti-bird technology...large propellers mounted on the wings so the birds get chopped up and they end up in the water instead of the plane.

ExperimentalAB 01-16-2009 07:56 PM

Everyone is talking about it. Everyone...Silly passenger-type questions and comments galore!

Had a lil old lady tell me today while she was getting off my plane...I have always flown U.S. Airways and you guys are the best pilots in the industry...I just gave her a smile and said, Thank you we do our best." HA! "JOKES ON YOU LADY! YOU'RE RIDING ON AIR WISCONSINS!" I didn't say that last part out loud, but I laughed in my head...

Little old ladies are the best. They are always so friendly.

i noticed in ATL that people were very friendly this morning whether it was a nod of the head or smile, they just kind of knew...i cant explain it but it was def a different way of looking at pilots .... a certain appreciation that they realized that we are important and are responsible for them and their loved ones, it made me feel proud for all of us and what we do day in and day out regardless of any incidents and accidents....people know now once again that flying can be dangerous and it s a reminder for them that pilots are professionals, not glorified bus drivers that will get you to where u need to go but will be there when the goin gets tough to do their best to get you out of the situation, whatever that may be.....today really made me happy once again to be proud of what we do day in and day out....

FlyJSH 01-17-2009 12:50 AM

I hope all of you who had contact with the folks reminded them that the starting salary of an FO was 20k.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, but perhaps it's your perspective that's changed and people are just being normal...

WIFlyer 01-17-2009 06:32 AM

I am deadheading to Memphis today so I guess I should be prepared for quizzing all the way there . .... maybe I will just ride up front

Glofliser 01-17-2009 06:49 AM

Had a smartass guy on my flight from DTW to JFK who told me he brought his flippers with him. I looked at him, rolled my eyes, shooked my head and told him "good for you" and I walked away

Flyboy8784 01-17-2009 07:31 AM

I've never had so many "Thank You's" and "Great Flight" in my life yesterday...Pax in RIC were tell all the gate agents that US Airways has the best pilots.

Firefighters and Cops all across the country were regarded as heros after 9/11

Maybe its our turn now

I couldn't agree more! Pax are saying "Thank you for the safe flight" or "Thanks for getting us here safely" more often. I started hearing it more just after the Continental accident here in DEN. I do think it reminds people that although flying has become routine it really is in our hands (Pilots and FAs) that they put their lives and trust in our abilities and training. I just smile and thank them for their business.

OO.

ridejumpfly 01-17-2009 11:53 AM

I knew it was only a matter of time.. 2nd flight out of LGA I flew after splash down a PAX asked me if I intended to kill any innocent geese... I told her not until tomorrow on my day off..

I'm curious to see what else they find in the hudson. Can't be good....

mjarosz 01-17-2009 02:03 PM

I was thinking that too. They're using sonar and dredging the river looking for a large hunk of metal. Wonder how much junk they're gonna have to sort through until they find the engine.

Flyboy8784 01-17-2009 03:02 PM

Ill bet Jimmy Hoffa's down there somewhere :p

mjarosz 01-17-2009 03:10 PM

Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode.
Young boy: Hey, there's a man swimming in the water.
Father: No that's probably a dead body son. You see when the mob kills someone they throw the body in the river.

Jerry: How could you swim in that water?
Kramer: I saw a couple other guys out there.
Jerry: Swimming!?
Kramer: Well floating. They weren't moving much...but they were out there!

I had to deadhead into DCA last night on AWAC. I was hoping we wouldn't land on 33, but of course we did. I was asleep until the gear came down (which always scares me - why does it sound like something is falling off?). When I opened my eyes, all the passengers around me were alternating between staring at me and looking outside at the Potomac, which was quickly coming closer. I just went back to sleep.

The sound of the gear coming down scares you hmmm...

I think the only thing that sounds better is my other half calling me daddy:D

LMAO...actually he has a point. Sitting in the cabin of a CR2 anywhere near the main gear makes for a rude-awakening if one is asleep for sure...

muushin 01-17-2009 10:05 PM

Starlings are all over the area

There Swarmin' all over the NY, NJ CT coastal waters area every winter, You hear it practically every day on all the ATIS reports "notams..... be advised.... use caution..... birds in an around the vicinity of the airport......",they are, for the most part, always starling swarms.

Starlings pose hazard at Lakenheath | Stars and Stripes

Colnago 01-17-2009 10:23 PM

lol, I deadheaded today and just fell asleep. I hate wearing my uniform when in the cabin but I had no choice. I wanted to avoid as much of the quizzing as possible. I could already imagine the questions, "Do they teach you how to ditch an airplane?" "Are you a co-pilot?" ....... and the typical questions, "must be good to travel for free, AINT it?" Luckily, no one talked to me today. :D

flynwmn 01-17-2009 10:41 PM

All I've heard is what is the Airport Code for the River and can we expect ferry service to include dividend Miles.

TurboDog 01-18-2009 05:04 AM

One thing is for sure and that is that you will never see a machine make that decision on it's own without pilot interaction.

shfo 01-18-2009 07:13 AM

I jumpsat in the back the day after and didn't notice any difference. I was in the very back and the passengers were so loud during the safety briefing I couldn't even hear it. I figured they might pay a little more attention.

Three Green 01-18-2009 09:42 PM

Riding the shuttle today, I notice the FA's reiterate the location of the emergency exits and the location of the life rafts.

antbar01 01-20-2009 09:52 AM

I'm looking for places to land like I was when I was flying 172s. It's been good for me--reminds me of what I do for a living, really.
