Hello all...

Due to the CFI biz slowing down sooo much, I am being forced to pick up a second job. I have an interview scheduled with Delta to work as a "Ready Reserve Ramp Agent." My question has to do with getting a Pilot slot once the regionals begin hiring once again.

I have been informed that many of the airlines like to hire from within, assuming you meet all of their published min's. My question is this:

Would working for Delta on the ramp help me AT ALL with getting a pilot slot with either ASA or ComAir?? I am kind of confused with the ownership of the companies. I have heard that It definitely would not help with ASA, but could with ComAir:confused:

If you have any experience or perspective on this, please shed some light!

Delta owns Comair.
Skywest owns ASA.

Comair and ASA both do their own ground handling in a lot of the outstations. Most companies like to hire from within, and you are correct that you'll still need to meet flight hour minimums to apply, especially once they start hiring as minimums will most likely be high.

I know of a guy that worked on the ramp at CMR for several years and was picked up with very low time, but just remember it does also leave room for the other affect to occur..... One oooops and it could be closing the door on the potential pilot slot?

Comair, if they exist in the future, will not be hiring for a long....long....long time. There are currently 300 pilots furloughed and rumors of more to come. But hey, you need a job, and it's aviation involved, so it can't hurt your chances and you make some bucks in the meantime.

When hiring does start again in the regionals, I think that the minimums will be much higher than the last hiring boom, since there are tons of higher time pilots on the street and airlines will be able to be picky.:(

Thanks for the info guys! It sounds like SkyWest should be where I apply as a rampie...Unfortunately, I just checked their web page and there's nothing for Atlanta.

I should meet ASA's minimums when they do begin to hire again, but
at this point, the possibility of helping me with a pilot slot in the future would just be an added bonus; It's pretty necessary that I pick up a second job.

Who knows, with the way the current jobless pilot trend is going, I may have to try and put my marketing degree to work, and work my way up at Delta, saying goodbye to the dream:( On second though, who am I kidding?...I'll wait it out like the rest of us:D

Minimums published now will most likely be a lot higher once hiring commences again ( who knows when that'll be )m make sure you've got way more to be competitive.

You might want to consider this...

Not only do you need to find a job that will pay your bills (and student loans) for the next 2-4 years waiting for a regional job, but you also need to find a job that will allow you to save up enough money in the next 2-4 years so you can live on FO pay for the next 3-8 years after that.

If you're ready to live with your parents and don't start a family for the next 5-12 years, you're all set. :D
