Direct quote from my sister in law speaking to my wife: "So what, now that your husband is an airline pilot he's making $50,000 to $60,000, right?"

Wife's response, "uhh, no, not quite."

My response: Laughter with a bit of derision mixed in.

Actually, several of those were about what I expected or more than I expected.

The fisherman salary surprised me however.

would have thought a court reporter would be obsolete back in the 80's with a little invention called the tape recorder.

What a bunch of hogwash! Is painting really that dangerous? Do you need a masters in engineering to install AC? Frankly none of those jobs are that impressive. With the possible exception of "Forrester" none of the jobs require a college education. And anyone who watches Discovery knows how well the fisherman with the truly dangerous jobs get paid.

The article doesn't really differientiate, but I wonder if this is the fisherman who are fishing every day - day in and day out - like shrimp fisherman or if they are averaging out the salaries of the Alaskan King Crab fisherman who are making that much money (or more) for a weeks time (ala 'The Deadliest Catch' fame) or however long a certain season lasts. In any case - $28k a year sure sounds low!

There are places and times to complain about the wages we make, this is not a time.

Yes, and those 22,000 people that lost their jobs will probably find new jobs doing similar work for less money and benefits. Every pilot at a regional (and many at majors) have a right to complain and voice their opinion. If they sit back and take it while times are tough they are opening themselves up to concessions. As a CAL pilot I can assure you that it will take a long time to make-up these concessions after the economy turns.

Your job (career) is not a gift, it's something that you earned. Protect it as best you can.

so instead of sobbing about how uninformed the public is and ALL of these continuously misrepresented articles that pop up everywhere why dont you make an effort to inform them, you can take 10 minutes to post the link/article here, why cant you take 5 more minutes and start with an email to the author of the articles and correct their ignorance.

be part of the solution, not just apathetic to the problem

Insert Pilot where fisherman is and viola! Sorry USMC I just had to do it :)...
