No. During indoc you'll fill out a base preference sheet and they do try to accommodate. But you won't find out your base until late in the sim training and you'll be assigned to bases where they need you. I got my second choice when I was hired. However, within about three months you can usually get any base you want. They do pay a small stipend to help you move (several hundred dollars) to your first base (not for subsequent bases changes unless it's a forced move).

I can commute to base and stay in a crash pad, right?

Over 75% of Colgan's pilots do. However, I believe one of the quickest ways to improve your quality of life as a pilot is to live in your base...maybe not now, but at some point in your career you should try to make that happen. Commuting takes up a lot of time. You lose a lot of your free time and flights have gotten very full. Most airline pilots will tell you this...but they still end up commuting. :) I currently live in my base. It makes a world of difference.

I was told there was no compensation during my training class in Dec. '05

I get 12 days off a month on average and commuting takes away 4 of those days. That's with being able to commute back on my last day of work! :(

On a rumor note, I saw a Saab in MSP in US Air colors parked on a ramp so perhaps Colgan is purchasing some slaabs from Mesaba for replacement or added flying.
