It certainly "kicks" sometimes when you disconnect the AP even in normal conditions as you mentioned. I wouldnt put it past it that in an abnormal situation like it was that it could have been fighting itself, and when the AP kicked off it could have gone nose up.
The AP does stink and does some crazy stuff at times. All of us that fly it have looked at it before and gone "what the heck is it doing" as it S turns down a LOC or dissengaged it only to have the controls "kick" making you again wonder "what the heck was it doing" and why was it was fighting itself? Maybe they were even talking about the nasa video we all know and were already triggered for the "correct" reaction. All speculation. Maybe we can use this thread to share our experiences of the airplane to become even more aware in certain situations. What was different for you, when you transitioned to the big Q from the smaller one or from other aircrafts? What are special behaviours etc. etc |
sigh......... how many of these are we going to have if you're a q pilot, in light of what has happened if you suspect moderate icing hand fly the thing until the NTSB concludes the investigation....

Rather everyday life. Exchange is what a forum is for. Please correct me, if I´m wrong. |

He does not fly for a US carrier. His knowlege seems legit. Ill post some things when I get back.

"Behaviour" gave it away possibly that it's an overseas pilot. |
doesn't Piedmont fly the longer 300 series?
|
They fly definately the 300 and either/both the 200 and 100 as well.
|
No I´m not from the US.
But our forums don´t have that many Dash drivers. At least not enough to have an own thread. I´m flyin the Dash Q300 & Q400 as an fo for Tyrolean (Austrian Arrows). No fish. Cheers Tobias PS: Whats your speed bug philosophy? Do you have the "ice speeds" on the the solid one ? |

PS: Whats your speed bug philosophy? Do you have the "ice speeds" on the the solid one ? We are bugging V1/VR/V2/VFRI/ (VCLIMB +20) but we have the supplement for t/o in icing with the INCR REF SPEED "OFF" (supplement 76). We brief for VFRI + 20 in case of EFATO |
and what does it look like during descend?
How do they set their bugs at colgan during descend? |
During descent we bug VREF and VGA. If in icing we bug the same speeds + 20 KTS for flaps other than 35, +15 KTS for flaps 35

200s left the PDT fleet about 3-4 years ago. |

Does that mean, you have no bug showing you your present min speed during descend (clean)? I was asking myself if they bugged their VA 0° (ice) on the Colgan plane. |
At Horizon we bug Vref and Vref ice. We use the ice number if we have ice, if windshear is reported or suspected, or if gusty winds. I still haven't figured out how to not make the plane float in the flare at Vref ice unless I chop the power and hit fairly hard.

During descend we have the outlined on the intended App Vtarget and the solid always on the PRESENT Va MIN.
The "ice float" reciept (that works for me) is to reduce TRQ to only 5% (heavy acft) 8-10%(light acft, due to reduced inetia) at 50 ft and start round out a little later than normal. Only works if you`re at reduced NP and F15°. |
