Why do people tip the driver, but not the maid? The maid does WAY, WAY more work for you than the driver does.

One of my favorite threads of all time- just want to see if there has been any change in 9 years. Is there any inflation in your tipping habits? A buck is not the same as it used to be. Have you gone up to $2 yet for a tip?

Let me ask you this, has per diem doubled? There’s your answer.
Because I am neither a self-obsessed millennial idiot nor a cheating capt with 12 divorces and not 33 cents to his name. |

I normally tip $1 to the driver if I'm with a group, and $2 if I'm by myself. Sometimes I change it depending on the city and the cost of living.
I never have the maid clean the room until I leave (normally in the room 3 days or less). I leave $5 (or equivalent currency) and any bottled water I have left over. On holiday I leave about $5 per day... Note: I am a captain and not at a regional. |

I tip $2 now for the crew van. More on a family trip.
For the cheap tools who don't tip... no, you're not paying them extra just to do their job, their compensation is based on the assumption that they'll get tips (if they don't suck). That said, no tip if they're late or don't load the bags... that's part of the job, so if only do part of the job they only get part of the pay. Doesn't bother me, I'm happy to load my own bags and keep the $2. |
We usually tip as a crew. One gets it arriving at the hotel, the other when we get dropped at the airport and so on. I usually do $5 for us both (or the foreign equivalent).
I feel maids should expect to clean my room once as part of their job. I tip maids if I stay multiple days and I let them clean while I’m still going to be there ($5). I generally try to leave it reasonable when I leave but if not, I’ll leave something. |
