Default Seniority question

Hi all

I keep hearing that seniority in the airlines is everything, but I don’t have the smallest idea on how that works. If I change airlines, do I lose my seniority? If you go to SkyWest or another airline, do you start off with the first year pay?

Thank you all.

Nature of the beast, I suppose. That's why pilots get so upset when executives come and go, while the pilots are there for the duration, unless they want to start over again at the bottom.

Its always nice to know that if your company tanks you will be on the bottom of some list again somewhere else.

Opposed to the other option where some one has put in years of service at a company only to have some one move in senior to them just because their company tanked... or even worse just because they decided to switch companies.

Seniority is everything... Get it early and try to find ways to knock off those senior to you... (feed them lots of cheesecake and pizza, convince them that its a great idea to barrel roll a 737, or bet the capt $50 to walk into the terminal riding a Harley buck naked with out a helmet!)

I think it was a DAL FO a few years ago who did a statistical analysis involving motorcycle safety, seniority, and upgrade times...

The end result was that he calculated that if every FO at DAL bought their captain a motorcycle, the net average improvement in FO seniority (due to motorcycle accidents) would provide a 5-1 return on investment for the cost of the motorcycle...

When you gain enough seniority and upgrade to captain, will you have to do reserve again as a captain?
