Some airlines require you to be CASS approved even to get a seat in the back; Alaska, for example.

Thanks for the responses, I will try to find out who my jumpseat coordinator is. But as far as it being my own airlines responsibility, that is not the problem. I am IN CASS and I even was denied a seat on continental express once because even though they pulled up all my info, they couldn't get my picture to work. It works on every other airline and at every other station I have tried, it is only continental out of Atlanta. Now I also know about the rule about D12, and there is never anyone there so I always go to a gate and ask if someone can come over to help me, and usually they do, only to find out "CASS is down." I actually have not met the disgruntled lady yet, Ill look forward to it :-P And then as far as needing CASS for the cockpit, I understand that is the actual rule of CASS but the POLICY of Continental out of Atlanta (according to some gate agents) is that I have to be in CASS to even get a seat in the back. I have had gate agents actually threaten the crew to report them if they let me on without being CASS approved for a seat in the back (maybe that was the disgruntled lady....) And I have had other gate agents tell me they will not let me talk to the crew even because they can't let me on the flight (again, with seats in the back) Crazy I know! So anyway I guess I will have to discuss this with my airline's jumpseat coordinator and see if they can help.

This is exactly why you need to go to your jumpseat coordinator. If there is a rogue gate agent threatening people, the jumpseat coordinators (yours and ours) need to know something needs fixing.

FWIW, even in IAH (CAL's HQ and hub), there is a wide range of interpretations and/or misunderstandings of CASS among the gate agents. Some check CASS even if I (XJT pilot) tries to jumpseat in the back on an XJT flight. Some don't.

I have a question about CAL CASS. Why are some of the outstations not able to look at CASS? Are thier plans into getting it available at outstations like PNS and LAS etc... The reason I ask is I live in Houston and CAL is obviously a preferred carrier to and from. I was on MIL LV in PNS this AM and my wife had a medical issue and I needed to get home. I showed up an hour early flight was full but not weight restricted and jumpseat was available and I was unable to get aboard, Capt said no CASS no seat. My company has a gate next to CALs that CASS is available on. Curious as to how this works and if there is anything in the works to get CASS at the outstations? Thanks.

I may be wrong, however I believe you have to be on active status for cass to work. I think mil, fmla, or any other leave or furlough nuls it all out.

Sounds as if the Gate Agent at D12 is a product of Public Education.....most notably Atlanta public education.

If you are denied again, calmly ask for her name and employee number. Ask to speak with her supervisor and explain to both of them that your company J/S coordinator will be contacted regarding the ineptitude and outright lack of knowledge regarding the CASS system.

I was just doing drills for the weekend. So not a True MIL LV, I am still an active status pilot. Gate agen stated they (CAL) do not have CASS at the airport.
