Furloughs over?

If the economy stays the same or only slightly worsens, do you think furloughs are over? I don't work for an airline, but I thought those who do could provide some insight based on the scuttlebutt they hear from their own company's rumor mill.

rickair7777 08-16-2009 07:20 PM

I think there will be more this fall, as loads drop off even further (this is going to happen, already a done deal based on advance bookings).

If the economy stabilizes, perhaps no more furloughs in 2010, followed by possible recalls in 2011. If not 2011, then 2012 as the age-65 bubble pops.

TPROP4ever 08-16-2009 07:22 PM

Believe it or not there has been some movement lately, not a lot but some. My company has run 2 upgrade classes, about 10, and has recalled about 20 furloughs or so. I think alot of this for us is due to some more EAS flying we may pick up...although I'm sure some is due to attrition. Hopefully things continue to move foward even if it is at an excrutiatingly slow pace...Some carriers are still losing flying so they may still cut back, Its kinda hard to get a read out there right now

Company rumor mills are not the best source of information at this point if you take into consideration the doom and gloom management portrays in this economy to try to get everyone to perform better. I know 10 year captain's who are applying for other jobs because they believe it.

With that said, I think the furloughs are pretty much complete. If we can survive this winter without anymore furlough's I think pilots will be in a better situation come spring.

I also hope that if this new airline legislation passes, that it will create a higher staffing need at a majority of the regional’s.. hopefully this will get some of our furloughed guy's back to work. Time will tell.

Winner winner, chicken dinner. Jet Blue's $599 unlimited ticket is a real winner, plus the new competition we'll see between JB/SW in Boston, SW & Frontier in DEN etc.

Peeps love their $99 coast to coast r/t's. They could give a rat's *** what we make, the hours we work or the work rules we endure.

Every industry is heading straight down, not just ours. Corporate greed is the cancer. What is the cure?

TPROP - where is the new EAS flying?

GrUpGrDn 08-17-2009 05:28 AM

Well at OH the plus sized lady left the building last October complaining of a sore throat..., still walking through this november.

saxman66 08-17-2009 03:50 PM

There's still going to be more furloughs. Comair is letting go 100 this fall. Mesaba is also letting some go as well. Thats mostly due to DL consolidation and getting rid of 50 seaters that don't do well anyway. Hopefully that will be it for the year. 2010....well that anyones guess. I'm thinking it will be flat, with maybe a few airlines here and there making a few recalls for summer flying. But I can't a see a mass recall then.

andy171773 08-17-2009 04:52 PM

Didn't Mesa announce a ton of furloughs that will be taking place over the next few months?

So..
Mesa furloughing
Comair furloughing more
ASA furloughing more
Mesaba furloughing more
Skywest holding on by their chinny chin chin still? (i'm asking Skywesters indirectly what's up with their company)

Hmm...notice the Del-trend-a. DCI carriers getting the ultimate BOHICA treatment...who would've figured....

Wait till this January when Delta and NW are on the same operating cert. The hammer is going to fall, and it's going to fall hard.

The light is 2012. But then we all die in December, stupid Mayans. :D

flynwmn 08-17-2009 05:13 PM

don't forget piedmont we are dumping 62 before christmas plus more after the shuttering of our LGA base scheduled in 2010

Mesaba is furloughing because we are beginning to park our "core 49 Saab fleet" Anyone still believe that bs line from the bankruptcy? By 2012 we will be a core 0 Saab fleet.... Otherwise yea anywhere Delta can cut 50 seaters (or outright get out of a long term contract) they will right now...... As for what happens after SOC at mainline, well maybe that end of the world at 2012 may not be that far off course, who knows.

I just got my furlough notice about 45 mins ago. Out at months end.

Does anyone have a LAMA membership application or do I just get grandfathered in?

tzadik 08-17-2009 06:17 PM

Dunno I've got atleast 30 below me and my buddy who's about 6 or 7 above me got it as well. I'd say atleast 40.

xtreme 08-17-2009 06:43 PM

You're not really a LAMA if you're still on the list...you have to quit or refuse recall when the time comes ;)

I'll take that recall right around the time we get stapled to the bottom of SWA's roster. ;)

Has Mesa been furloughing the last few months or this is the first one after the earlier ones?

tzadik 08-18-2009 11:25 AM

There was two rounds in June. This round appears to be the feb 11th and 25th classes in their entirety. Congrats to Mesa for their continued pursuit of failure and worthlessness. Just when u think they've actually come close to rock bottom they get out the jack hammers and work feverishly throughtout the night. Hopefully someone will step in before the unthinkable happens.

The actual letter was a microcosm of Mesa... Three paragraphs of generic bs followed by two pages of threats.

Can you post the letter for us?

I have several friends with Mesa who are saying that it is just a big mess. Displacements out of seniority, followed by the long grievance process, followed by this furlough, which is supposed to take place before the displacements. How they plan on staffing the airplanes before the pilots are out of training nobody knows.

I wish you the best of luck. Hopefully you’ll be able to find another job sooner than later.

tzadik 08-18-2009 12:03 PM

Flights are already starting to get cancelled due to staffing... I had one yesterday. They're only downgrading half the original number right away, the equipment and domicile displacement was rediculous. I mean a monkey could have done a better job figuring that out. Senior guy getting displaced to different equipment and domicile gets an effective date of 9/1 whilst a junior captain getting downgraded gets to keep his seat and domicle till end of year. Junior assignments are running rampent for FA's right now and they're starting to make cameos again on the pilot side. Honestly, think how Mesa runs itself on a daily basis... The way they're handling this situation is no different if not worse.
