AMR had a buyer for Eagle. They just didn't like who it was and what the outcome would be. They just couldn't let go of the Caribbean to the purchaser.

The version I heard was AMR had a buyer but they wanted to put so many strings on the deal, the buyer walked. The strongest rumor says it ws Sky West with RAH coming in second.

This rings true since AMR is far too much of a control freak to just let someone plunk down a billion bucks and walk away with 95% of their feed which is providing 25% of their revenue.

Think what would have happened if Southwest bought Eagle for a billion bucks then let all the people go and parked all the airplanes. AMR would have been bankrupt within a year. Those 777 flights leaving Chicago and Dallas over the pond don't fill themselves.

it was skywest and republic and the restrictions caused them to back off.
