IAD crashpad
Looks like myself and some friends are being displaced to IAD. Anyone know of good/cheap crashpads preferably with public transportation? If not, how far are they from the 'port? Thanks.

Yeah, there's not much out there anymore... The one I used on reserve is long gone... You guys would be best off starting one of your own like the previous poster suggested.

Im flirting with the idea of starting one, I ve seen first hand how the Air Tran flight attendant that runs mine here in ATL does it, it I know I can make it work, but im only gonna do it if there is a large amount of interest. Once the awards come out Nov 12th Im gonna post around ASA ops my contact info and if enough people are intersted. However if Im gonna do it im gonna do it right and it will be a nice place . Ive run the numbers and it will be less than $200 a month per person if we get enough poeple, and by enough Im not talkin about overloading it w too many....I have a good friend that lives in Reston next to the airport that Im gonna have show me around the area in the coming weeks so I can get an idea of where would be the best place to set one up. It WILL be within 3 miles of the airport, so itll be close and convenient for alll.....anyways PM if you are interested and want more details. I ll run it by you to see what your thoughts are. Thanks-

Here is the contact information for the Sterling District Supervisor responsible for shutting down the crashpads near IAD. I let him have a piece of my mind, and I encourage you to do the same.

why were they all shut down??????? how did they find all of them????????

The Washington Post did an article on the lives of regional pilots.
Pilot 'Crash Pads' Under Investigation in Loudoun; Officials Plan to Cite Owner - washingtonpost.com County officials went on a mission to locate the house in the photos. According to the reply I got from the Sterling Distrcit Supervisor, a house with 30 tenants violates zoning code. I agreed that 30 people was excessive, but removing the only affordable "housing" for these people doesn't alleviate the problem of lack of affordable accomodations in that area. |
ALL of them are shut down? Does this Supervisor really have nothing better to do then to shut down crashpads? How in the word are people going to commute with absolutely no crashpads available. Some needs to start one under the radar. Mregan has a good idea going. I for one will be in if you start one.

If the TSA recalls actually happen, there will probably be a sudden increase in demand for IAD crashpads too since I imagine that's where the recalls will be based.

Without transportation, the crashpad situation in IAD isn't great. There are a few packed places run by some mainline UAL flight attendants. If you like you're personal space, at all, don't bother. You might try the Hyatt Place Herndon Dulles Airport-East. A TSA pilot worked out a crew rate there for $49 a night and I'm sure they'd be happy to have more business. If you're not on reserve, this option works great.
