Pizza delivery driver. Never done it. Maybe good pay and probably flexible schedule?
|
Teach skiing.
I ski instruct on my days off. Sure its only good for the winter but its fun and puts a few extra bucks in my pocket.
Just make sure you actually know how to ski or snowboard before you try to teach someone. ;) |

Hey JJosh122. I tried to PM you but your inbox is full. I think the forum only allows 20 pm's.

I do herbalife on my time off... Not that hard to do if you just need some extra income.. you are also taking care of your body and health at the same time.. and the people there are very nice

I teach online classes at an aviation college. The paycheck is bigger than my regional flying check and I only teach 1 class per semester.
|
I worked as a substitute teacher for several school districts close by. Good hours and easy to just press 'Play' for the kids. Usually made $110-$125 a day. I don't do it anymore but it wasn't too difficult to get started. Granted, my undergrad is in education.

What about being a ground instructor at a flight school? I still have an active CFI/CFII/MEI. Considering getting something in a boat yard to do fiberglass repairs and bottom jobs on boats.

Deliver the paper. Usually it's late at night like 12-3am.

I hate to say it but 90 percent of the jobs that have been proposed are minimum wage range money. Do you really want to go to work driving pizzas or waiting tables for 40-50 bucks here and there but be treated like a high school dropout while you are doing it?
I would suggest something that can generate a little more cash, maybe even cross-train yourself in another skilled trade. A real easy into job I would suggest is mowing lawns. It will keep you in great shape and make 20ish per hour average. The people who mentioned things like website development or other IT jobs hit it right on the head too. A few years back, the mechanic I used to use was a Continental Express pilot. He and his buddies had a car shop together and all worked flexible shifts. I am a corporate pilot and my lifestyle is a little different but still much the same. Here is what I do on the side: Sell cool things I find on Craigslist/Goodwill Sell car parts for a friend at commission Flight Instruct Contract fly Manage a GPS tracking software for the company I fly for(negotiated into my salary). Point being, is I never stop. Lots of work is out there, knowing the right people definitely helps too. Good luck! |
Yikes Necroposting! :D

I work a 2nd job as a Table Games dealer in a casino. The tips are outstanding and it can be a fun job if you're outgoing.

Bartender man.

I ran an aquatic center before I began flying professionally. I'll fill in occasionally as a lifeguard of CPR instructor. Perhaps there's a job/skill you used before you began flying professionally that you could revisit.

I am rehabbing an old house right now. I keep my uniform with my, and when they call, I leave. I have a partner, who has the money, and I have the skills to do the work. It is a long term reward, however, not an instant return on your investment (time).

Push wheelchairs at the airport. I knew a guy in SLC who did that every day he was on reserve. Not my choice but I guess it could work.

No more are my days of researching and taking notes ahead of time. This will be so worth the three bucks, nice job! |

Are there any active DPE's or 141 Check Airman that are line or reserve pilots? I'd like to hear feedback if the regionals in particular have an issue with us doing checkrides on our days off?

Sorry to revive an old forum topic here but I was curious if any reserve guys/gals out there have thought of, or currently drive for companies like Lyft, Uber, or Sidecar in their spare time or while sitting on reserve?
These companies seem like a good option while waiting for "the call" as the work appears to keep you local and you can start and stop working when you decide. Thought? Comments? |

Learn a skill like web development or database programming that can be done on your own schedule from anywhere. The challenge will be breaking into the industry without doing it as a full-time job but once you get established it meshes well with pilot lifestyle. Added benefit that you can ramp up quickly to full-time if you get laid off, medical issues, etc.

I'm on relay rides and people rent my truck daily. It more than pays for my insurance every month. Relay rides is different than side car though. With Relay Rides you don't drive the people they drive themselves. I see a lot of people doing Lyft though and I'm also a member in case someone has my truck and I need a ride. Either that or I use Zip car for $8/hr. Either way what really makes the difference, as far as receiving business, is the location that you are at. I'm on west coast and as you may or may not know, the west coast is filled with people who wall, bike, or hitch rides. East coast could depend on what city your in. Hope that helps.

I've said it before on this thread, and ill say it again... web design/iOS, Droid app development. I've been doing it for a few years now while sitting reserve. I make some money on the side making the apps but the biggest benefits come from the tax write-off. It's easy to learn too, you just need patience.

Become a cab driver, you'll be within range of the airport at all times and make more on one fare that you will flying the barbie jet all day.
|
This is too bad...

Although, not on reserve just unemployed until I can someday get an interview with a regional, I have been writing PLC programs on a laptop for various companies who use automation equipment. PLC=Programmed Logic Controllers. Definetly secure work since everything is going to repetitive automation, and it can be done and uploaded from anywhere.
