Default CFI in Fort Lauderdale No Pay!!!

I saw this ad on willflyforfood.com and instantly became sick and angry. It is an ad asking for beginning flight instructors to come and fly for this school for no pay!!!!!!! Only room and board. The sad thing is they will probably have tons of instructors that will do it. What a career >$50K in debt then starting pay $0. What do you guys think?!?!

Somehow I'd think the labor department would have something to say about paying below minimum wage.

The federal minimum wage for covered, nonexempt employees is $5.85 per hour effective July 24, 2007; $6.55 per hour effective July 24, 2008; and $7.25 per hour effective July 24, 2009. The federal minimum wage provisions are contained in the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), which is administered and enforced by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Employment Standards Administration's Wage and Hour Division. Many states also have minimum wage laws. In cases where an employee is subject to both the state and federal minimum wage laws, the employee is entitled to the higher of the two minimum wages.

There's obviously ways around it...if they're providing room and board, that could be deemed as compensation. Also, flight time has been found as "compensation" in the courts by the FAA pursuing a private pilot who didn't pay his pro rata.

Also, look at Gulfstream. FO's PAYING to work?

If there are pilots out there that want to do it, let them suffer. We're our own worst enemies.

Did it actually say in the ad that they will not pay CFIs, or did they just list $0 under the salary, because sometimes employers don't fill that part out?

It said $0 dollars in the salary so I thought maybe it was a misprint. Then I read further and it said prior to submitting your cover letter please note this is not a paid position. The only compensation we can offer is free room and board and a vast abundance of PIC hours. (How is the CFI suppose to eat!!!!) Gosh this one just irritated me sorry for the rant.
