Will Furloughed UPS = Delta's New Hires?

You're furloughed from UPS, interview at Delta and Delta asks you to give up your seniority number at brown, NO WAY IN HELL.

On the same token, just because you fly for UPS does not mean you're more qualified than the competition. There are thousands of qualified pilots outhere that will be competiting for those 240 spots at Dixie....

"Some of them" most likely refers to the DAL furlough bypass guys who went to UPS when DAL furloughed and still hold seniority numbers at Delta. (If UPS hired any, IDK.)

And while I've never heard of DAL asking anyone to resign a number, back in 2001, my NH class had 2 FedEX, one UPS and 2 SWA pilots in it. Whether a pilot resigns a number to fly with someone else while furloughed is a personal decision which can only be answered by that person. We know your feelings on the issue, but I'll bet a donut that there are some who would give up a UPS number to go with DL, just like I'm sure that there are a few DL pilots who would give up their number to go with UPS or FDX.

Delta will hire whomever they feel will make the best future Delta pilots. If I were furloughed UPS I wouldn't even bother with Delta unless that is where I wanted to spend my career.

Most HR folks and flight dept folks don't want to waste their time only hiring the folks with the most time in big jets. That doesn't by any means translate to success in training at a new carrier.

I bet most new Delta pilots will be RJ guys, and fairly young ones at that.

I know a few pilots at UPS that are not even furloughed UPS, but active that are going to apply, they are not even DAL furloughees. Same is true for AMR, CAL and UAUA. For some reason there are a lot of pilots that want to make DAL their home and have applied here.

And also.. it may not be just about the money and that flying boxes from Louisville to Buffalo at 3am is not that appealing anymore.

Well, we all know that, but HR at places thinks differently. There is a reason that the 54 UPS furloughs as of today ALL had heavy time BEFORE UPS. When I interviewed the HR person had the audacity to congratulate me on getting the interview since he had 7000 applications and his choice of the industry. DAL HR will be the same. They will probably have north of 5000 applications for 300 jobs. Internal recs will help, but the fewer of those you have, the more international, transoceanic, and/or big jet time you will need on your resume to get noticed.

I was an RJ guy and there is a reason even a start up like Virgin America looked at guys with Airbus time for their first hundred slots or so. And Airbus time still puts you in front over there.

In short, if HR can hire someone who has proven they can do the job elsewhere, they view that person as more of a fit for their operation.

Good luck to all the guys trying for Delta. It is a good job and there are few of those available right now.
