Q400 and Telex 850

Anyone ever use the Telex 850 in the Q400? I will be transitioning to the Q soon and wonder if I will need a new headset (currently in CRJ).

Thanks!

Couple of CAs I flew with used it and didn't seem to mind. I think it might not be quiet enough, but it's kinda your preference. When I was in the Q I used the UFlyMike and a Bose QC2. It was perfect for me.

I went from the CRJ to the Q400 and used my Telex 850s. They work great. The noise level in the front of the Q400 is comparable to the CRJ-700, just a little hum from the props. The loudest thing up there is wind noise from the windshield wipers and sometimes the side air vents. It can be kind of hard to hear if you have the side vents full open or full closed but somewhere in the middle works pretty well. If the cabin noise reduction fails in flight you will notice it right away but it's still comfortable whether or not it works. It still has the same problem all Telex headsets do that if you leave the hot mic on it creates static for those with really quiet headsets although it is no where near as bad as it is on the CRJ.

If you can tolerate the noise in the 700 with the 850s I don't think the Q will be a problem.

I flew with a guy who used 850s in the Q and seemed to like them. He did mention when they were new they "sounded hollow"... but he got used to it. Doubt you will need to replace them.

Thanks for all the replies!

I use the Sennheiser HMEC 26's (very similar to the 850's) in the Q.....no problems here! Go for it.

I use the Telex 850 in the Dash 8 100 and 300. Not really that bad. If I can handle it in the 100 I am sure you will be fine in the 400. ;)

I am about to go on the CRJ200 and currently use the Lightspeed ZULU headsets on a prop. They work great although I am trying to get something physically smaller. The zulu's work great but are bulky. How are the Telex 850's on the CRJ200 ??? How are they compared to the bose or zulu's ???

Anyone have acutal experience with this plane and those paticular headsets ??

I used a 750 for years, and i liked it very much, but I was wearing ear-buds underneath. If your pilot-in-crime is a low-talker or mumbler....get used to saying a lot of: "say again", "excuse me", "uh hu", "ha ha", and "altitude select"!
I traded another pilot for an 850 for a leg, and I did not really like it. I just liked my 750 set up better and was used to it. The 850 was louder than the 750 with ear-buds. So, if you like your 850 I would give it a run, but would still recommend ear-buds underneath. I know that sounds annoying, but you get used to it.

Works fine in the 50 seater, personally I think the 100/200 is quieter than the 700/900. Doesn't have that noisy avionics fan. The Bose or the Zulu will be A LOT quieter though.
