Headset
 

I am a flight instructor and I'm looking for the best headset for the money. I want a headset that I can use for both instructing and the airlines once I get there. Any suggestions?

For what it's worth, I had a Sennheiser HMEC-25KAS I used flying the CRJ at work and rental C182's and C172's. It was ANR, light weight, pretty comfortable and worked well in the Cessnas as well as the CRJ. About $540 over the web. If interested, be sure to look at the KAS model, it is stereo and includes volume control that the KA model lacks. They now make a version that gets it's power for the ANR from the mic jack so no need for batteries. If you get the battery powered version, 2 AA's ran about 25-30 hours in the CRJ. It's a pretty tall order to find the 'one perfect headset.' Good luck.

I sold all of my books and a few flight bags and bought a set of Bose.....Simply the best. I'd go as far as to say its worth every penny. David Clark is coming out with a really good set. It has adapters for MP3 and cell phone as well. Bose doesn't have that. Its light weight and has the magnesium top. Very strong and comfy. Bose $1000 or David Clarks $750 or something like that. Lightspeed makes a good set as well. Good luck in your search.

I have the Lightspeed headset and they are very nice and a lot less money than the DC or the Bose. However, they are freaking HUGE! They get in the way in smaller planes, and (this shouldn't be important) they make you look like a big dork. I have tried the Bose, and sound quality is a little better than the Lightspeed, but is it worth another $550? I say find a place that has them and try them out and see what you like best. BTW, the lightspeeds have an input for the cellphone and MP3 player as well.

I've used the Bose for two years in Turbo Props for work, king air & beech 1900 and small stuff for fun. Some of the Captains still use old DCs and on empty legs when we switch seats I've used their equipment and honestly don't know why anybody would subject themself to working like that. That being said, the other viable option is lightspeed. Their headsets are bulkier and the sound quality isn't as good, however they are half the price of the bose. The price of the bose is pretty much the only drawback. They do have interest free finance plans however.

That new DC set looks pretty nice, however for only 200 more you could get the bose. Between these two its a no brainer.

Overall I would say the lightspeed is 80 % of the product for half the price. Most lightspeed guys will tell you: "yea....its a pretty good headset" I've yet to talk to a bose guy that doesn't absolutely love the headset.

More comments on the new DC's for anyone already using it would be appreciated!! I'm seriously thinking about buying it, love the idea of the mp3/cell phone hook up. And like duvie said ive been using an older DC for a while and i think with the right head set it will make flying a little more enjoyable, their starting to weigh me down and make my head hurt while i fly.

Get by the cost and it's the Bose.

Cost alone says nothing of the product. I know the Bose is a heck of a headset, flew in the demo cirrus with one on.

Anyone out there used the new David Clark that can give an opinion of it?
Even better if youve used both the Bose and the new DC so you could compare comfort, size and other features.

The Bose is simply amazing. I've worn no-names, and they were useless. I've worn the Lightspeed once or twice, and while the noise reduction was decent, it wasn't up there with the Bose...and the earcups gave me a big headache. The Bose is tops in comfort and ANR by far, as long as you can get around not having a plug for your mp3 (which I don't need, anyway). I bought mine off of Ebay. They're still pretty pricey, but I did save another $200. Good luck.
