DTW Displacement....Where to Live?

Just looking for info from Detroit area people on some areas to live that are safe and not too far from DTW. Looking to rent a 1-2 bedroom single family home with yard if possible. Or a dog friendly apartment close to a park ect. Regional FO and girlfriend makes about the same.....Any info will help. Thanks

With a combined income of ~70-80K and intentions to rent a 1-2BR home you can live anywhere you want within an hour drive of DTW.

As far as nice places to live, Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor are both good that would give you what you want for that price.

I lived in Novi at Fountain Park Apartments for 3.5 years. Very safe and nice area, awesome eating and very affordable. My 1 bed apartment was quite large, very quiet, and 710 a month. 2 bed apartments were a bit over a grand.

Met my wife while I was living there too. The summers there are awesome, winters can get a bit long, but arent horrible.... and that's what travel priviledges are for!

I would recommend the Plymouth-Canton area as its where I grew up. Be careful with the ypsilanti area as there are some high crime areas there.

ann arbor is my recommendation

Depending on where your wife finds a gig, about 25-40 minutes north of DTW are some nice areas as well. Novi, Northville, Farmington Hills to name a few. Canton-Plymouth area has some real nice parts as does Ann Arbor.

Belleville and ypsi have some nice dog friendly apartments right on Belleville/ford lake, they're decent areas. If you like being in the middle of it all more, i'd recommend Ann Arbor.

Stay around the lake in Belleville, gets a little ghetto the farther you go from the lakes...if you have kids steer clear the schools suck there.

Ann Arbor is another 10 minutes down 94, great city but can be pricey. I am considering a move there with some friends at the end of the year.

Could go up to Canton (15mins to the lot)...that has some decent areas, or you need to go up to Livonia, Northville, Plymouth, Farmington Hills. All have easy access to the freeway and are 20-25 minute drive to the parking lot. Most apartments I have stayed at allow pets(including my current place), but there is a fee.

I'm in Farmington hills and it takes me 25 mins to the lot (and I drive slow) and then another 20 minutes from the lot to sign in.

All of the above are correct. If you are with Comair, though, I wouldn't sign a lease.

anyone know where the name Novi came from?

It originally was the number 6 stop on a train line, hence No. VI

learned that in band class

I just moved to Canton, it's a nice area, plenty of places for food and shopping on Ford Rd. Not to mention Ikea down the street to furnish your apartment. I'm paying $600 for a 1 bedroom. 18 minutes from my driveway to the employee parking lot.

Try the one in AA on an evening when it's warm...better um....scenery.

Plus 2 dollar domestic drafts on thursday.

Also Mexican Fiesta just down the road (Ford Rd) from BD's in Canton...awesome food and affordable. Might want to make sure you don't work early the next day though.

DeltaA320 03-24-2011 05:42 PM

I live in Canton too, I think it's a pretty good area. 20 minutes to the employee lot on a bad day, but I'm on the southern end, Denton & Geddes area. So I try to avoid Ford Road. Otherwise, if you have a dog, there's a gigantic dog park opening up. Everything you could possibly need is on Ford Road. Restruarants, bars, gym, dry cleaners, shopping, whatever. If you have kids try to make sure you're in the Plymouth-Canton school district, Van Buren and Wayne schools aren't so hot. PM me if you have other questions!

Ann Arbor is great. I don't know what you would pay for what you want in Ann Arbor, but my guess is it would be a little pricey given the University and a seemingly endless supply of students whose parents aren't on a budget.

A great alternative is Pittsfield Township which is adjacent to Ann Arbor and close to I-94. There are dog friendly apartments and at least one dog park. I'm guessing you could rent a house too. A comparable property in Pittsfield Twp. will always bee less expensive than Ann Arbor because property taxes are significantly higher in AA. You don't have to pay property taxes if you rent but your landlord does which means you pay more.

I live about two miles from I-94 and it takes me about 25 minutes to get to the employee parking lot. Traffic is never a problem.

Whoever said Ypsilanti - don't listen to anything that person says.

Drive up I-275 and anything to the north is good.
