PennAir?

Does anyone know anything about Peninsula Airways in Alaska? I've heard they're hiring people into the Saab 340 and gaining routes from Era? They are no where on APC.

GetErDun 09-21-2006 04:33 AM

they have a pretty mixed fleet.......you'd live in the freezer just to fly a 340? I'd rather go to colgan....but that's just me......

If the pays right...I'm more getting information for some friends of mine.

AKfreighter 09-21-2006 11:35 AM

As I am told the pay is 1200 base with 12 bucks an hour. I think that's elsewhere on the site too. There is an Oct. 2 class, then nothing till February is the word on the ramp now. Funny, I get different info all the time from different Pen pilots. I know there's some on here...

ACE (Alaska Central Express) in Anchorage, B1900s, has a class starting Oct. 2 as well, and there's a couple CFI's from the states in it. Still not full, and looking for pilots. Oh, by the way, the pay is 20 per flight hour, not block. About 100 hours a month.

If you get a chance PenAir is the best place to fly
The Aleutions have some really neat stuff to see and do and you are home every night with a 4 on 3 off schedule
senior guys ( seven years plus) who are captains make around 100k
i will never leave this company

overspeed 09-22-2006 10:54 AM

Wow.

That sounds awesome! Why aren't they in the database as a regional? A friend of mine told me they're hiring, but I don't know anything except what you guys have said.

mccube5 09-23-2006 12:59 PM

I'm sure the guys here at APC would love some information from you 185flier.

They should create a separate section for Alaskan 135 ops., that would be pretty cool. Haven't completely ruled out the idea of going up there in the near future, it would be nice to have a solid source of good contact information for when you make the trip up there.

I second that, based on what you guys said I'd like a little more info...

How long for Saab upgrade?

If you have Saab PIC time, do they ever hire with the intent to upgrade you faster?

AKfreighter 09-23-2006 04:09 PM

Again, I don't work here so others know better than I, but...

I talked with a Pen Saab Capt. and he asked if I had 4000 hours. I said no, and he said, "Oh, well its takes 4,000 to upgrade to captain." I took it to mean that they would hire into the left seat if you looked right.

185flier, are you actually working a 4 on 3 off schedule?

185flier 09-23-2006 05:55 PM

yeah I work 4 on 3 off and if you bid right you can get a line that the first flight is at 5 am you fly 6.5 hours with 3 landings and you are done by 1:30 in the afternoon. awsome
they don't hire into the left seat and won't upgrade on seniority but on performance
we have had some upgrades in 8 months and some will never upgrade
the average i think is around 4 years
if you start in the 135 system flying saratogas and caravans you upgrade quicker
we have a guy who started in the saratoga and caravan then went left seat SAAB with no twin time
they look for skill and judgement
if you can't cut it in the right seat they let you go they won't have right seaters that are lifers
great place

lzakplt 09-24-2006 08:46 AM

If I'm not mistaken, no one has jumped seniority to upgrade in a few years.

lzakplt 09-24-2006 08:53 AM

I like this company, too. I have no plans to leave any time soon.

185flier 09-24-2006 01:55 PM

sure we have had a couple of guys that when thier number came up to upgrade they were cut instead

lzakplt 09-24-2006 05:12 PM

I know what you are talking about. What I was refering to the fact that its been a few years since we've taken a new guy off of the street with whatever great credentials and let them jump seniority to upgrade. (We did it with several pilots when Reeve went under, and none of those guys are still here.)

185flier 09-25-2006 07:25 AM

you are right
I wonder if they will do that when ERA goes under

lzakplt 09-25-2006 08:26 AM

My guess is no, but what do I know.

185flier 09-27-2006 08:02 PM

ERA hearing was today word is the judge may make a desicion in a few days that would shut them down what have you heard

PenAir-New Hire Bases?

Where can a newby expect to get based at PenAir?

I am trying to figure where I will hide my wife when I'm flying. Assuming I get the job that is.

Thanks
