Gulfstream Intl (3M) expansion

Looks like they are getting someone's Saabs... Mesaba? Colgan? Eurobirds?

The Nassau Guardian

Continental/Gulfstream International Airlines is positioning itself to be the primary airlift provider to the Out Islands, investing $85 million in a fleet of Saab planes that will double its airlift capacity into the country.
The first of Gulfstream’s new Saab 340 30-seater aircraft, which will replace its 19-seater planes, is set for delivery in November, according to Jim Swieter, the company’s Senior Vice President of International Development. Another aircraft is scheduled for delivery every month thereafter for two years.

Mesaba, Colgan are the same.... They can have them, the Saabs we're getting rid of are outdated.

If they are 30 seat Saabs, they are A models. We got rid of the last of those from Mesaba back in 2005 (and they were junk then)

PenAir operates all of their Saabs in a 30 seat configuration - they need the extra space for cargo/bags. Crapper is up front, I believe, on their planes.

PropDriver 08-15-2011 03:33 PM

The Saab in the article is a B model that flies out of IAH for Colgan

Didn't they already get Brasilias a few years ago?
Wonder how much they will charge somebody to sit in the right seat of the Saab for 100 hrs?

Their FO academy ended after the acquisition that took place earlier this year.

Fly782 08-15-2011 04:33 PM

Bimini island air?

jdlilfan 08-15-2011 05:17 PM

AE has 20+ Saabs sitting in storage in ABI. Maybe they are finally getting rid of them?

Milk Man 08-15-2011 05:59 PM

I saw one in msp about 4 years ago that popped a wheelie up on top of a pushback tug. Super funny.

rightside02 08-15-2011 09:27 PM

Street hire captains will
Most likely happen , place is short staffed per some friends over there

PurdueFlyer 08-16-2011 03:55 AM

So 2x the capacity, does that mean FOs will now have to pay 2x as much for their jobs?

Seriously how is this place still in business?

Milk Man 08-16-2011 05:52 AM

So Gulfstream only hires FOs that pay for the 121 experience? Or did they stop that? And if they didnt, do they hire FOs that dont want to pay? (meaning get hire like everyother airline and not pay the company)

Sorry, this was suppose to go on my previous post. Question above

boeingt7 08-16-2011 06:05 AM

I thought Gulfstream went into bankruptcy not too long ago??

travelnate 08-16-2011 08:54 AM

they were purchased... tom cooper only owns the part 135 ops - Gulfstream Air Charter - now.

dogismycopilot 08-16-2011 05:21 PM

My understanding is the "program" is over, and besides a few former program FOs on furlough, the company will have to hire pilots like everyone else once this expansion starts. An investment firm called Victory Park Capital bought Gulfstream as part of an agreement to exit bankruptcy protection earlier this year.

As far as I know, most of the "old guard" from the Cooper years has resigned and a new management team is in place. These new owners seem very motivated to see the airline succeed, and are willing to throw a lot of money into it.

Why would you furlough guys who are contributing to the bottom line, or were these guys no longer paying to fly?

You know something is amiss when there are pilots on furlough, and, simultaneously, street-hire Captains are being discussed. Isn't GIA a Teamsters property?

stis202 08-16-2011 07:42 PM

I say good luck with that. I think it's enough work to fill up a 1900 let alone a 340 to those out islands. On top of that they now need to compete with 3 other operators which are all Saabs going to the same place. Sounds like they want to come in underpriced. I wonder how that will work out given that they are on a prorate basis.

Bill Lumberg 08-16-2011 08:59 PM

How's that Montana operation going? Is there a crew base out there? Is it senior?

PruneJuice 08-16-2011 11:20 PM

Why didn't they change the name? It is so tarnished.

What are the 3 other operators? IBC is the only one still running... Bimini island air was the only other one and they got shut down

Maybe to pilots but not to the average customer who buys a ticket, not to mention rebranding can be very expensive.

The program guys did their 250 hours, got "hired," and promptly furloughed. There may be a handfull that haven't been recalled. I believe the street CA discussion was raised since the growth plans call for more than doubling the fleet size.

When are the Saabs supposed to be online?

The first of six SAABs will be arriving in Nov with deliveries continuing through July. B+ models, if I understand correctly. Not sure who they used to belong to.

Pretty sure they will end in "XJ"

PatrickBateman 10-17-2011 09:06 AM

You know what airplane I'd love to fly?

Saab 2000

PatrickBateman 10-17-2011 09:07 AM

Edit: I also like repeating myself....
