Personal Statement
For some you who have kept up with my postings. Will have notice I have been having difficulties getting hired at regionals. Tonight my current stats are: 1284TT and 125 MEL. However, am considering in creating a personal statement to present during my next interview (CommutAir) Wednesday Oct. 11, 2006. Which is located in Plattsburgh, NY. Can some of you chime in by Tuesday your thoughts on this! I would have the formal statement typed and with me. Would also like to know when woulod be an appropriate time to make it?
[email protected] Thanks! |
are you having a tough time getting hired or getting interviews?
and don't do a personal statement. to me it seems like a bs story about you, kinda like you are not confident in who you are and your skills, so you need some essay crap to explain yourself... too fabricated in my opinion just answer the questions they ask, keep it simple. GL |
My statement
The difficulties are getting hired. Not the interviews!

At least you'll leave a lasting first impression. |
How many interviews have you had and where have they been at?
I know my company has stated that they've been interviewing people who look good on paper but aren't passing the personality phase of the interview...Make sure you come off as personable and easy to get along with...these people know your qualified (you got the interview) make sure they WANT to go flying on a four day trip with you. |
Absolutely be personable. The majority of airlines are hiring based upon your personality. Yes, you still have to pass the tech., written, sim and/or HR portions; but if you've studied and put your best effort into your ratings then you shouldn't have a problem. Always act excited even if your not. Also, my best advice is to get your interviewer talking about him/herself. Ask him/her questions like:
1. How did you get where you are? 2. How do you like it here at _____ airlines? 3. Where do you see the industry going? Whatever you ask him/her make sure it's an open ended question!!!! That way they talk for awhile. This will help with starting conversations. Remember that everyone likes talking about themselves and after he/she finishes, 99.9% of the time, they will enjoy the conversation and therefore like your personality. Just STAY AWAY FROM OPINIONS. You never know if his opinion is the opposite of yours and this could destroy everything. I don't recommend a personal statement. Some majors like it but I haven't heard of any regionals caring. |
I agree with JetJock and flynavyj. I used to bs with commutair mx guys, and talked with the CP once. They seem to be a laid back company who would view something like that as way to formal. I'm sure none of your soon-to-be interviewers gave a statement of that sort at Commut. Just my opinion, but that's going out on a ledge you don't need to be on.
|
The Statement
I would also like to know: What is the worse that can happen they say no! If I did choose to make it would leave a first lasting impression. Considering I have been too a few others and have had no luck. Maybe it is time to change direction and start thinking outside the box. As you wrote it is a ledge I don't need to be on. Could you please explicate that?

Why CommutAir
Why CommutAir:
From a geographer’s standpoint, your website encapsulates my very thoughts perfectly: “Based in the beautiful Lake Champlain Valley between New York's Northern Adirondacks and Vermont's Green Mountains, CommutAir provides scheduled air transportation to 24 cities in 8 States”. Geospatially speaking, the location of your company and routes are both very picturesque and different from Los Angeles, CA! Furthermore, you fly B1900D’s, a turbo-prop which would make for a nice transition into a Part 121 carrier from General Aviation. It would be a great learning experience and stepping stone. CommutAir has stability within the company and job security. As far as I know, you are not seeking to take over the regional market. In addition, your company will be receiving Q200’s-Dash 8’s in early 2007. My understanding is that it will be replacing the B1900s and based at CLE. On a final note, I want to work for a company that sends an applicant positive space travel pass, and picks up hotel room and tax, demonstrating care of its employees. |
First, let me start off by saying that I did interviews at the last company for which I worked. The letter you posted sounds like you are trying a little too hard. They will see that as a ploy to take their attention away from something else. Even if there is nothing else, that is how it might appear. If you want a REALLY good reference book, there is a thin book called "sixty seconds and you're hired." It's cheap and breaks down HR questions and tells you why they are asking that question and what they are looking for in your answers. Don't come across as having "canned" answers. Just like the other guys have mentioned: personality, personality, personality. You are qualified for the position, otherwise you wouldn't have an interview. Now they just want to see if you will make it through the program and if they can spend 4 days with you. If you have any questions, pm me.

That personal statement was way too formulated. Sounded like, and i know you did, just took blurbs off their website and put it onto paper. When you said something about the personal statement i figured it was going to be about who you are where you come from and why it makes you the best man for the job. You need to just relax man, like everyone else is saying just go in and be yourself. You seem to be trying to hard. Take a deep breath, and honestly just have fun with the interview.
|
Two words: RE LAX!
I have never heard of anyone doing something a personal statement at a regional airline. Like everyone else has said, you are already qualified for the job now they just have to like you. A canned statement is not going to do that. I wouldn't want to spend a 4-day with someone who was only able to communicate their personality and who they are through memos... |
other side of the spectrum
Hey guys,
I've been waiting for about a couplemonths now , maybe a little more since i've spread my resume and have gotten no replies what so ever, except for one interview. It's seems like i'm having the complete opposite problem of actually getting the interviews and that's without having anyone see me... I'm at 1100TT+/200ME... Any thoughts? -schone |

Yep. Memorize your written personal statement! Maybe I should start writing mine for the majors now that way I can have it memorized!

Look they want you to be yourself. I can almost garentee if you read that out to me in an interview I wouldnt hire you. Practice your answers but if you cant even talk about yourself with out writing a short story with fancy words they are going to think you are not going to be able to handle CRM at all and give you the thanks but no thanks.
