Will A Cut Above shirt solve these two issues? 6'1" 195 semi muscular build.

The VH aviator is the only 100% cotton short I've found. I believe VH makes two versions, one being all cotton. Anyone know of other pilot shirt brands that are all cotton?

BUMP - I was going to order today and saw my original order I had a discount. When I called they said only 1st timers received the discount. Dang it...I'd like it again.

Anyone have a valid code for A Cut Above?

Baja. Please PM when you post.

Thanks - Baja.

No Cut Above Codes???

Baja.

Machwon 06-09-2014 08:26 PM

I've got a Cut Above code that I'll post in the morning when I get home from a trip. I've been using them for the past couple years and love the shirts and the customer service is top notch.

Machwon 06-10-2014 06:37 AM

Try this code. Feel free to pass it around.
101555.

V1 ROT8 06-10-2014 07:42 AM

Another A Cut Above code... 126953. Feel free to pass that one around as well. ;)

I'll 2nd the above. I won't use anything else other than A Cut Above.

126953: Invalid or expired coupon

101555: Valid, but doesn't seem to do anything.

Disclaimer: I am not a fist time costumer.

17.5 neck on my dress shirts with an athletic build. Just got the shirt from A Cut Above; the neck fits just fine but I can't get the main part of the shirt to button across my shoulders/chest. It's the tapered version. Looks like even with the large neck size it assumes a very slender build up top - not talking about the gut, rather increased upper body size from weightlifting. Going to try an 18.5 and see if I can get it altered (which is a full size above what I normally wear). Other than that I like the shirt.

Just wanted to toss an alternative view out there in case future readers come across this thread and are looking for shirt "reviews". I'm mainline UAL and was not 100% pleased with the standard issue shirts and really wanted something "tapered" so I tried the A Cut Above shirts.

Personally I did not care for them.

1) Weird padding on the neck that just bugged me.
2) 1 velcro breast pocket and 1 fake pocket? Yuck.
3) Super heavy weight. I prefer light weight material.

Tapering for a slim guy was good, but the negatives out weigh the positives for me.

This is NOT putting down anyone elses preference. It's just an alternative view.

Not to pile on the above the A Cut Above discussion, but I'm an average guy 5'11" and 170lbs and the A Cut Above shirts fit really strangely. I couldn't find a shirt that me correctly. If the neck fit, the rest was like a tent. The long-sleeve shirt sizes they carry are bizarre....

MNSUpilot 09-22-2014 10:27 AM

Not trying to hijack the thread, but apparently I work for the only airline that doesn't wear wings on our shirts and ordered 2 SS shirts with the eyelets for wings and don't have a need for them anymore. They're made by Crew Outfitters with a 16" neck. I'm 6'1" , 170 lbs and they fit nice. Just looking to get them out of my closet…. $15 each would be great. PM me if interested.

Thanks

I put together this video testing Van Heusen Pilot shirts with a Coffee Splatter Test at the end. It is pretty revealing yet admittedly a little boring.

I was ticked when I purchased 4 of these shirts and found their quality to have diminished so significantly. I eventually found some old ones on ebay from a retired Hawaiian pilot that he purchased 10 years ago and never opened.

cut above collar

Hi, I heard one guy say he did not like the collar on the cut above shirts that the foam was irritating. Any other comments on it? I need new shirts and trying to decide between cut above and landerwood. I am concerned about that foam collar being uncomfortable or feeling weird on my neck. Thanks

I personally like it. Keeps my neck from making the shirt collar dirty.

A Cut Above is a heavy duty shirt (heavy material). Don't expect anything lightweight. Bad for the summer, but they do last a long time....

I didn't like the thick feeling. They refunded my money, so you can always try it. Might be worth shipping cost.

Do you guys know if the Landerwood have a thick feeling also or are they more like a normal pilot shirt I am only used to the VanHeusens commander shirt?

Y'all need to check out pilotshirts.com.

No way. They have 5 different material styles/blends of shirts. Some of which are very thin. Thin enough you will show your "pinkish hue" if you dont have the undershirt on.

I use their tapered 2G style in the winter which is a little thicker and their Stratus style in the summer which is nice and light weight.

So how thick is the 2G that is the style I am interested in can you give me an idea compared to a typical dress shirt? I read one review that says it really needs to be pressed its so thick do you think that is true? Thanks for all the help i really appreciate the info.

Thanks for the clarification. I've stuck with the one shirt. I can't recall which style. I think the cheapest one. Ha. It still remains that they are a heavy duty shirt that has good durability. I don't own an iron so the wrinkle free is definitely a bonus.

I would say the 2G is still thin enough you can see your hand move behind it but it is not as thin as a common light white dress shirt that you would wear with a suit. I prefer the Stratus over the rest, it is very light and comfortable.

All shirts need to be pressed. So I may be the wrong person to give advice on that one, I cant imagine taking any shirt out of a dryer, popping some bars on it and heading to the airport. The both iron well and the more you starch them up, obviously the crisper they become.

Herman 11-04-2014 09:59 AM

Try Cintas. Dry clean w/ heavy starch and razor sharp military creases. You will thank me. Comfortable, durable and affordable. Steam in your hotel shower, they will look as good on day 3 as they did when you started the trip. Cheers h

Does this mean you rent/lease a uniform shirt? What is the fit like and the cost?

Herman 11-04-2014 01:22 PM

Yea I know...my friends at Ups get theirs for free every year. One guy lost his medical and gave me a 1/2 dozen to try. Take a look see...you might be pleased w/ the outcome.

bedrock 11-04-2014 10:58 PM

Cintas shirts fit like a Muumuu and are thin as a handkerchief.

billythekid 11-05-2014 07:57 AM

shirts

Go to the mall, outlet mall, brooks brothers, or lands end and try on a few business shirts on sale. Take them to a tailor, pay $10-20 and have them chop the sleeves off and make epaulet straps out of the material.

Herman 11-05-2014 04:45 PM

I was teasing. Try Armani.

Dude Abides 11-05-2014 04:54 PM

Or if you want an adventure and nice form fitting shirts, go to a tailor in Bangkok. They will keep your dimension on file and you can reorder for the rest of your career.

If only the dimension would remain the same for the length of a career :D

Herman 11-05-2014 05:16 PM

That's what my wife said.
