AWAC Training

To those of you who are currently in the Jan 16 class, hope all is going well. I'm going to be in the Jan 30 class and am curious what went down this week. Also, how many people are in the class and what bases were given out? Finally, offer any info you feel may be helpful to those of us that are coming in soon. Thanks.

NightDog 01-20-2012 02:44 PM

Posted my application at the beginning of the month and still -not reviewed status-. Can anyone provide a better insight of whats going on at awac?

Moonwolf 01-20-2012 04:13 PM

Have you that are going to be in the class been told the numbers that are being hired?

The word is that they're planning to hire 120 pilots in 2012. FWIW I interviewed early December and offered Jan 30 class date.

Also, with regard to my original post, still looking for someone currently in class but would like to hear from anyone that went through training recently. Thanks.

Currently in the Jan 16 class. First week was basic indoc stuff. FOM, FCM, get all of your manuals. Class is made up of 8. Bid for our bases are supposed to hear by Monday. Class is real laid back. Have a test at the end of week one. If you do all the readings and homework the test is not difficult. Overall the first week is very informative yet not that difficult. Any more specific questions let me know otherwise so you in a few days.

Thanks highflyer. Can you post the bases given out on Monday? Greatly appreciate any updates.

Anyone know why i am not able to upload a new resume on to the AWAC website?? i can update my profile but it does not give me a page where i can upload a new resume. It keeps saying thank you for applying as soon as the profile pages are updated. I've been struggling with this problem for the last 2 years. Any help would be appreciated.

Question on Flight Case/Bag

To Highflyer or anyone else who is currently in training or recently went through training, what type/brand of flight case or bag do you recommend to bring to class? The letter I received states to bring one to hold manuals and other materials that will be given out and that max dimensions are 18" x 15" x 9". Thanks.

rombo60 01-26-2012 06:45 PM

I would recommend a Scott Leather or a Hunt. They are very well made and "MADE IN AMERICA". The upfront cost is more but it will last most of your career and save hundreds in replacements. I started with a Luggage Works nylon and bags like that just don't last. Also, the pockets on it were great but you can't use them because then it won't fit in the CRJ.

This is the one that I got before I came to training. Very durable not too expensive

For those of you that are looking for a more affordable option check out amazon or office max. I bought a stebco vinyl case from amazon for 80 bucks and its been pretty good the last year. The bottom is a little worn because I was too tall for my old Samsonite roller aboard, so I was periodically dragging it on the ground. On that note, I just bought the Luggage works roller aboard with the plastic frame and it supports the flight case A TON better.

Office max has a catalog case too that is like 40-50. If you check out the store (just down college ave, less then a mile from your hotel) they have the same one with roller wheels. They can order it online without them. The store clerk offered to pry them off, but I said ahhh no. I bought a cheaper case due to the entire industry going electronic. You don't need something really expensive. I'm guessing they will be obsolete in 5 years anyway.

Hope this helps. Best of luck to all :). Study hard, study in groups, get to know your sim partner, and don't beat yourself up in the sim when things don't go your way. I really believe everyone has a point in the sim where they don't think they will ever get through it. Mine was sim 4 and my partner's was sim 5. After that everything clicked and got better.

Flight Case

Thanks guys. I Really appreciate the advice. I think I'm going to go with the Hunt case and have it shipped directly to the hotel in Appleton. See some of you on Monday.

Harbor Freight sells a great case that fits perfectly for $32 ($40 + 20% off coupon). Shipping is pretty cheap if you don't have one near you:

Aluminum Tool Case - 17-1/2" x 12-1/2" x 7-1/2"

That will easily get you thru first year pay. After looking at others cases, I wouldn't buy a case that does not have metal skid guards. No matter what type of case you have, the bottom will get chewed up from constantly lugging it around.

My rec: Buy the cheapie to get you thru first year pay and then evaluate what you want.

Unless you plan on flying a DC-8 for the rest of your career, a Scott flight case (while nice looking and Made in America) is a waste of money... you aren't going to be using a flight case for the next 30 years! No one will....

Thread revival....I have the same question as Nightdawg on the first page...Applied a few weeks ago and it is still showing a status of "Not Reviewed" and wondering as well if there is a point of contact at the company that may know something or if I should still keep waiting......Not sure I have enough posts to PM me since I saw someone PM's Nightdawg with a possible answer, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

A couple of weeks is not that long. They are currently interviewing and hiring so I'm sure they're getting a significant number of applicants. Since you say you applied a couple of weeks ago, that is around the same time the new minimums of 1000/100 kicked in. Do you meet those new minimums? Finally, if your looking for a company contact but aren't eligible yet to receive PMs, then you need to provide an alternative way for someone on this forum who may want to help you, to do that in a private manner. People don't post that kind of info in a manner where hundreds or thousands of people will see it. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Thx for the dose of reality Cessna....I figured they are swamped with apps and I am just being impatient. I just need to chill. Yes I am at 1330/700 with 600 turbine (Furloughed XJT that did not take the recall) and I will figure out in my profile how to set up a way to recieve messeges (posting on this forum thing is new to me). Take care

I don't know if you know this, but the private message feature kicks in when you reach 10 quality (more than just a few words) posts. With all the topics discussed on this forum, it shouldn't take too long for you to reach that.

Wait until ur checkride is done

I think you are all jumping the gun on buying flight bags and stuff, how about you wait until you make it through Sim and order it that day, with a 25% washout rate at a regional, based on that number it means that 2 out of your class of 8 won't fly the line. That is a reality check for you don't junx your self by buying everything before you have even made it through ground school.

featheredprop 02-19-2012 12:49 PM

buy the cheap bag youll need it to carry all the manuals and jepps .If you worry about washing out you shouldnt be there to begin with . Positive attitudes are a plus .!

jackal24 02-19-2012 06:30 PM

You do need something to carry the manuals/Jepps between class and the hotel. A flight case will work, but some in my class just used a backpack. You really don't need a flight case until OE.

Ouch that's hard to read after spending almost 3 years on reserve in the right seat, including a displacement thrown in there for good measure. Hopefully this is the reversing of that trend, welcome aboard.
