I've certainly learned a lot from reading Skyhigh's posts. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'd like to add a story about my CFI. He went to a small school in the west for an aero science degree that he paid way too much for...He and his wife worked two jobs each so they could live in California on his CFI salary. He had been flying as a CFI for 6 years and have a little over 1,000 hrs and 25 ME hours. I asked him why he didn't move or do something to get more hours and hired. I had to tilt my head a bit to make eye contact- he rarely lifted his head , always spoke/moved like someone constantly looking for approval / acceptance / validation. You know the type? He couldn't afford to move - the risk was too much for him. With his loan payments he needed the stability / any stability he had. In the end he ended up interviewing with the local police department. He wanted to become a helo pilot. I think he was just holding onto any part of the aviation dream he could... He seemed a rather pathetic site in the end. For him the dream ended as a CFI with 1,000 hr SE and 25 hr ME... I honestly felt bad for him... He was one of the many reasons I won't step into an FBO again. I found the whole set-up to be one of the most negative environments in my life. Kids putting up with abuse just to get another hour in the log books... -LAFF That is a sad but common story. My guess is that on his first day as a CFI he had his head held high and steam in his stride. Continuous disappointment and constant poverty eventually takes a hit to ones self confidence. The feeling is that if you are so worthless that your employers can get away with paying you dirt then perhaps you are. My guess is that if you were to run into him today as a police officer he would be like a different person. SkyHigh |
Wow, it took a while to read everything on this thread. You guys kinda made me want to cry! But to all the perpetual CFIs, teenage wannabees or just plain wannabees on this forum, I urge you to listen to folks who have been there and done that. Everyone's experience is different, of course, but every story has a lesson to be learned. The greatest gift the older generation can give you is the gift of knowledge and experience.
There is a time and place for everyone and everything. I hope you can sustain your interest in aviation through poverty and hard times, because by all accounts, it's an endeavor worth pursuing. |
Oh, forgot to say to JetJoc that I was convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that the F-18 is faster, meaner and sexier than the F-14. hee hee. (Got this from a one time jock who long ago flew the F-18 up at Cold Lake and Canada's TopGun).

Skyhigh, just wondering what are you doing now? And how is the pay?

SkyHigh For the most part - the experience was really difficult for me because I had to force myself to get to the FBO , concentrate , and get my rating done so I wouldn't have to come back... I found the young officers that didn't make it thru UPT were the ones with the most anger / bitterness in the military. I unfortunately made friends with one that turned out to be one of the biggest *********s I've met in the military. -LAFF |

SkyHigh One of the saddest things I witnessed was a CFI asking the FBO owner if he could do some of the ME flights. Owner told him he could but he'd have to get checked out and pay for it like everyone else. -LAFF |

I used to tell him to join the AF and at least he'd have a shot at he airlines. He didn't want to because of the war and deployments. I got the feeling he lacked some leadership / confidence to get people involved / motivated to get things done..You know - basic self-confidence...

You are right he should have joined the military. However as you know it can demand a very high price. As I mentioned in another post you can have anything in life just not everything. It you have a family or are tied to a certain location it can bring and end to your chances at the airlines. I have always thought a career in the major airlines was more costly than it should be for what it is worth when compared to other professions. It is our lust for flight that takes us into deficit.
