To the OP RSW would be my only choice if I were ever to try to commute out of FL. My time there non-reving before I was in CASS was pretty decent even in season but like anywhere else it can get bad. |

My husband commuted from FLL to IAD for six months. It is challenging on everyone, but I think it's the best option at least for the first six months to year of working when you have a family, because chances are you will switch bases within your first year and that makes for a lot of work with a wife and kids. He was able to commute from South Florida up to IAD without ever having to call out or use the commuter clause. He did have to jumpseat a lot, but always got on his first or second flight. Sometimes he'd have to go up the day before he was on rsv. to be there on time which was tough. He usually flew in & out of FLL but sometimes had to fly into MIA and I'd have to pick him up. It was a really challenging time for us, but I'm glad he commuted up because he ended up getting a new base after six months. The hardest part for us with reserve commute was that often he'd just be sitting in his crashpad not even flying, but have to be up there. Be prepared for a challenge if you commute reserve, but it's definitely doable. Best of luck!

......as a guy who commuted out of FLA for 20+ years here is my advice:
1. MCO is the easiest commute out of Florida. The only other city would be MIA/FLL and that would be heading to NYC area. 2. Do yourself a favor....MOVE! I love FLA, but once I finally bit the bullet and MOVED TO MY BASE my life is 200% better. Think long and hard about this. I commuted out of RSW, MCO and MIA. MCO was the easiest bar none....I was commuting to IAD, ORD, and LAX. (LAX was not by choice) |

Thanks for the feedback. From anyone's experience, besides IAD, is it an easier commute out of MIA, FLL, PBI, RSW or MCO to any of the following: BWI BOS IND SDF BDL PHL ORD MDW Finally, is it easy to get to MCO from MIA, FLL, PBI or RSW via commuting? Thanks |

I did MIA - BOS for a year and it was really easy. Not that many flights so I did have to go up to work the day before my trip and come home the day after but there were RARELY ever commuters trying to get on so the jumpseat was always mine. In a year of commuting I never got bumped! AA crews were really friendly and really try their hardest to get all the non revs on. You can also take JetBlue from FLL - BOS and it was the same experience on them.

In my situation, my best bet may be to commute to MSP. DTW or EWR via PHL, IAD, BOS, CLT, NYC or ORD. I understand that I may have some cancellations and may be bumped off a few flights, and I may be home 1-2 days per week at most. Would any Compass/Expressjet guys help me with the following: 1.) Which is the more likely junior base for a Compass new-hire(MSP or DTW)? 2.) What is the schedule likely to throw at a new-hire on reserve? Would it be early callouts like 2AM, 3AM, late morning or afternoon report times? 3.) Does anyone else have any experience commuting with Fedex, UPS and other cargo carriers? 4.) Is a commute from (MIA, FLL, PBI, RSW, MCO) to DFW a difficult commute to get on? 5.) Is a commute from (DFW) to MSP, DTW or EWR a difficult commute to get on? 6.) Is a commute from (MIA, FLL, PBI, RSW, MCO) to CLT a difficult commute to get on? 7.) Is a commute from (CLT) to MSP, DTW or EWR a difficult commute to get on? Thanks |
