Does Anyone Else Get This??

It’s amazing how many people in the general public think anyone that is a pilot makes alot of money. I’m embarrassed and don’t want to freak them out that the guy in the airport food court makes more than I do flying them from one place to another. I was at LAX sitting ready reserve (yay) and was talking to a passenger heading to JFK and I explained what my reserve is, he replied...must be nice to sit around making really good money?? All I could say was, no pilots don’t make alot sitting reserve.......is it me or does anyone else get this too?? Sorry, just needed a place to gripe.

not sure where you work, but I doubt you make less than the foot court employees. They all get raped by HMS corp, working $8/hr, part time. Its like $200 week to work 30 hours. You have no idea what bad feels like, as you sit there 8 hours a day, getting paid at least $2000/month playing with your IPAD or flying.

I think we are underpaid and maybe you work for some awful outfit but I just get bent when guys say they make less than the guy at McDonalds.

Well, I consider work being anytime I'm away from home or the hotel room. So sometimes we easily put in 55+ hours a week. Divide that by your weekly gross and suddenly that hourly rate isn't all is cracked up to be.

The guy at McDonald's gets to go home to his family and friends every day, he gets to play with his dog, go to Best Buy after he gets off, he can cook his own meals if he wants to, he's not stuck in a hotel room without transportation, he doesn't have to pack up all his stuff every morning, he has clean clothes available to him...want me to keep going on? I agree, I'm on duty every minute I am away from base because of my job. For a lot of the FO's or guys on reserve it's not such a great deal....

Why the modesty? Why not just admit to the pax that your making 25/35k a year a and you're away from home 80 hours a week to do that?

By being vague or avoiding the question we are only perpetuating the stereotype.

Because so many "get off" on the thrill of being what the public perceives them to be. These are the same regional pilots who wear their mainline partners lanyard; "Look, it says United so that's where I must work."

Or the ones who actually say they work for the mainline carrier or just simply says "XXXX Express," all under the guise of not wanting to "confuse the passenger with a regional name they never heard of."

Then I guess that guy wanted that lifestyle and he decided to work at McDs and not become a PILOT.

To the OP - you should take the time to educate the public when the chance arises. No need to exaggerate the issues facing airline pilots.

Lots of young 20 somethings sitting in the right seat of RJ's making over $40,000 with no degree required to play. If you are making less than the food court guy then you are doing something wrong and if you want to be home every night like him then you should find a different career.
