XJT CR2 Overwater
 

According to the latest Jetstream, we now have an overwater exemption for the CRJ-200. Seems like an odd use of resources given the amount of CR2's we are removing from the Delta CPA. MIA comes to mind but seems to be more of a pipe dream than anything. Thoughts?

Seriously though, this is a very feasible operation. Especially with Delta not giving any more 900s this way. Plus it also puts our eggs in separate baskets, in case one of them bellies up.

How far overwater? Depending on the exemption it might allow you to use offshore routes into/out of the NE corridor when the weather goes down or there are major flow issues.

I thought it was FAA regs that require a life raft on board for overwater ops? And no, I'm not referring to the glorious seat cushions ;) isn't it supposed to be more than 50 NM from the mainland you require a life raft for every sole on board? Been a while since I reviewed this stuff so forgive my ignorance here :)

The "word on the street" is MIA announced in March. This would seem to support that prediction.

If its true, I can't figure out how junior or senior it would go. I'd jump and relocate if it goes junior.

We aren't required to carry a life raft with the exemption. I believe that's the purpose of the exemption. My memory is a bit fuzzy but I believe the CR7/9 fleet can operate up to 162 miles from shore and they are not equipped with rafts.

You'll need life vests for every occupant and it is up to 162nm between certain latitudes, which essentially let you go from Wilmington to MIA.

Where do you think you will go out of Miami that needs it. It would be more useful MIA to ORF than MIA to the islands. You do not need it for the islands, and you do not need it for the west coast of Mexico. We already to LRM an the entire Bahamas with the ERJ without any problems or over water needed. Maybe you will do something via SJU? The places we have problem with over water is going north or across the gulf and thats not even a real deal, its only when given a direct coming out of ORF or PNS to something close to destination.

Good question. I have no idea. We use it on the CR7/9 fleet to get to various island destinations from ATL (BZE, CZM, PLS come to mind), but I have no idea what they are planning with the CR2.

It works well up and down the east coast. You can get out on the routes overwater and avoid being squeezed in over land.
