Hiring Bonus

Why are some unions allowing their companies to offer hiring bonuses?
PDT tried it, and we shut it down. I know PSA would do the same. Anyone here a rep at Eagle or Republic? By allowing hiring bonuses, you are damaging pilots already on the property. If the company wants to attract and keep pilots, they need to raise all pay rates.

Hiring Bonus

Well said. I'm a little surprised the Eagle one wasn't strongly protested.

Republic's union can't do anything about it because they allowed it with the crj program so there is a past precedent set by that.

Generally this is correct. Either raise all rates across the board or alternatively give EVERY pilot a bonus in any year that you need to give new-hires a bonus. If they are short pilots, they should pay all the folks who stick around, as well as the newcomers.

You look at regional pay and then seriously ask this question?

Yes, thats the right thing to do, but they won't do it because they don't have to, yet.

They may attract more applicants by offering a bonus and may keep them by getting new hires to sign a contract.

Once the established F.O's start calling B.S. and leaving in droves, they will have to offer some kind of retention bonus too.

Its starting to happen now, especially since the likes of Virgin are accepting guys with no 121 PIC time. Who cares how long the upgrade is at a regional if you don't even need it any more?

Its interesting to see how this will play out. The tables have sloped towards the senior regional captains for too long now, where some are earning 5 times more than their First Officer counterparts. We are about due for a shakeup.

Retention bonus is called, RAH gives you 5K and to come over and fly the E175 but with a 2 year contract, by then it will be hard for you to leave and start over again. There is your retention bonus

This is probably what management is counting on and for most guys / gals this will work. No one wants to start over after two years unless the move is in the right direction. The contract is also much easier to enforce in court with the bonus. The court system would more then likely at least make you repay the bonus. Unlike contracts at other places with no bonus, the contract is not enforceable.

Only for the suckers that take the bait!

Who knows where this industry will be in 2 years. Would suck to see your buddies getting hired into the right seat of an airbus while you're locked in an E170 at $31 an hour & counting down the months.

No thanks.
