Ask A Regional Pilot

What's a "major regional airline?"

Travelzoo: Ask a Pilot: A Candid Q&A

*Let me know if this has been posted already. I've been in trial the last couple days and have been neglecting my duties to the Forums.

His take on electronic devices is ignorant at best. Many of us have seen interference where electronic interference is at least a plausible explanation. Not to mention the fact that the cabin being "prepared" means all your crap (including phone) is stowed to prevent it from becoming a projectile, along with the loss of bandwidth across cell networks which is the purpose behind the FCC's separate and additional prohibition on airborne phone usage.

A "major regional airline" is a regional that fits the DOT definition of a major airline. It seems to me by the description of city pairings, he flies for Skywest. It is a good reminder on why an airline would never allow a pilot like this one to talk to the media. This candid conversation makes us all look very unprofessional.

An airline located in the "major national LLC" list on APC, not to be confused with a regional.

Seriously, what airline pilot writes like this:

Whereas some puddle-jumper (19-seat) airliners

I call shenanigans. this so called "First Officer" is not real, and if he is, identify him.

We have a winner! Tool of the Day!!

Idiot.

.........?

"Major Regional". Same as "jumbo shrimp", or "government intelligence".

Wow.. the Huffing-and-puffington Post strikes again. I guess its too bad that the public has to be subject to this torture... maybe someday this "news" organization will actually start to produce anything half worthwhile. In the meantime, I want my 5 minutes back.

Dulles is on his top lists of hated airports? This rookie has obviously never been to NY.

If I started a flamebait thread like this, I'd get points or suspended. But I guess it's ok for a mod...

...and I guess I'll see you all in two weeks for even saying this.

I actually think it was well written. He has better prose than 70% of the posters on this website. (Though I am sure his responses were edited). He tells the truth and I agree with a lot of what he says, even if it was a little too casual. I have read several pieces like this that were WAY worse and off the mark (i.e. that Reader's Digest piece a year or so ago).

I've certainly been asked, "Which route do you fly?" at least 20 times. It is annoying. I have to explain every time I don't have one which confounds people. I also rate airports based on food availability near the gate. I also like high ceilings, less claustrophobic.

And he's right, pilots are the worst offenders with the cell phones. Why else would I have seen at least three airlines include "Cell Phones - off" on Before Start/Pushback etc checklists?

Not sure why everyone is hating.

I enjoyed the article. I thought it had real-person sarcasm embedded into it and that made it readable. It's online, if I wanted to read a technical journal I would pick up the hardbook.

I think people are getting their panties in a wad because it de-glamourizes the jerb to the last bastion of ignorants: the passenger public. Wait, the job has incredibly underwhelming compensation AND is ordinary? Yeah, I can see the hate in having the benefit of the doubt taken from you. I know we're all professionals, but let's face it, you're not docking the ISS here for a living, it's a system monitoring jerb these days. Sometimes you wish something would start blinking just so you could stay awake and make yourself feel accomplished. Monitoring the invisible magenta light-rails of the sky for too little money and too little time at home? Not so much.

I've always been quite fond of Dulles actually.

It should be called "ask a moron."
