Commuting from New Mexico?
I'm thinking about throwing in my hat and try a regional. At 46, Its probably a bad idea, but I cant seem to keep anything stable in the 135 world.
Any recommendations on which would be the best option for commuting from New Mexico? thanks sb |

Commuting from New Mexico?
Isn't there a company called Air New Mexico? I heard they had a nice fleet and were pretty reputable. Plus turbine pic ;)
|
It Pacific Wings, its a Caravan, and, honestly, dont need turbine time, but thanks.

Seems like regionals based in DEN or DFW are your best bet out of SAF. Other cities would be a two leg commute...
|
If you want to stay in Santa Fe, I would try SkyWest, Republic, or Eagle. Since you don't seem to need any turbine time, I would stay away from places like Great Lakes and go to an outfit that can provide you with a good commute/QOL.

A lot of new service into SAF lately so that should help the commuter. Keep in mind possible weight restrictions when it is warm.
Lakes' loads in and out of SAF (per statistically insignificant small samples) dropped a lot with new competition, not really a surprise there. I wonder how long those routes will be around. For now though, Lakes will get you to DEN or PHX. Just allow some extra time in case they are late.... Anyway if you did commute out of there I would give yourself enough time, as a backup, to drive to ABQ and have a backup flight down there in your pocket. But that is just me. |

Depending on your time you might try for a major airline rather than a regional.

ExpressJet serves DEN from SAF and is opening a DEN base in the fall. Skywest has a DEN base as well as PHX. If you can commute on your own metal it makes a big difference. XJT does ORD from SAF as well. Good luck!

If you don't mind my asking, why on earth would you recommend a company that wants everybody based at uncommutable outstation bases in the NE US to a commuter from SAF? |

I've been offered an interview at republic for the Q. I may puke.
on the other hand, I'm flying to salt lake to for an interview as a systems engineer. sitting behind a desk again, I may puke. I'm afraid if I step away from flying for a couple years, it's going to be difficult for me to get back in. |
Thought about 135 in Alaska? Hageland (Era's 135 side) is 2 weeks on 2 weeks off. People commute from all over the country.

I'm here in Salt Lake for my interview at Overstock.com as a systems engineer. If they offer, I think I'll take it. I spent some time going over Republic and at 1500/mo after taxes and who knows when/if an upgrade will happen, I dont think it will be a wise decision. I'm running out of cash and I have to fish or cut bait before my savings is to the point where I wont have enough to leave santa fe for a new job. This is pretty much going to be the case at just about any regional. At this point in my life, I cant take the chance of another furlough, or another company failing, or another whatever that resets me back to the starting gate, and without significant time in anything other than Learjets, I think my options are too limited at this stage of the game. I'm going to go to sleep now before I throw something at the wall. :( |

I've had a resume up there for some time now. No calls.
( With few exceptions, regardless of one's experience, new hires at Era start in the sled for some seasoning (duration varies), then move the the Caravan, then the Navajo, then you jump over to the 121 side to fly the B1900 or the Dash 8. Most openings are filled by internal candidates, so there aren't many opportunities to enter directly into the B1900 or the Dash 8. |
