Guard Shenanigans

As we all know, there is often chatter on 121.5 that shouldn't be happening. Some of it is so bad you would otherwise believe that a bunch of 6th graders have hacked the frequency. Any of you guys want to chime in on where this kind of stuff comes from and why? Who would allow it to go on in their cockpit? What I heard last night west of ORD was so off the wall that I felt compelled to ask the question. It is really embarrasing when ATC gets on and demands it stop, only to get another outburst in response. The thought of paying passengers being in the back with these morons was hard to fathom. Are these some of the same bozos that do the SEE YUH routine on the radio also?

I get it. Nobody likes the Guard Police. But come on. The other stuff really makes you think twice about who you might end up on an airplane with.

Fire away.

And the reason why this thread is in regional thread but not majors/cargos/fractional is? :P

While annoying, they instigate half the crap most of the time, people need to lighten up and I guarantee the guard banter would be cut down. Your frustration is a little excessive, hopefully there are no kittens near by.

Man I am totally with you. One or two "events" in your career and you become someone who obsessively monitors guard for its intended purpose. Its sad when you have to turn it off because of these idiots. Can you imagine being the guy who has to sit in an ATC facility and listen to that crap for an entire shift?

Theres a reason why some pilots don't make it to the peak of their potential career. A lot of that is attitude and professionalism.... realizing there is a time and a place for everything. I'm guessing those who do less than professional things on guard are the same people who wonder why they're not where they want to be in life.

it goes the opposite way too.......this is a real story. "mayday mayday baron 1234 engine failure severe icing 15 miles south of pIne Bluff"........"you're on guard" from a genius in a 767 flying nearby.

How did you know who said it, did they identify themselves?

Same reason there is so much rediculousness and blabber on these forums. Anonymity.

Here's what will help fix that:

FOM Section Xx, Paragraph XxX:

"No pilot will knowingly, nor will the PIC allow any pilot under his command, transmit on emergency frequency 121.5 for any purpose other than outlined in and in accordance with FAA regulations and Airman's Information Manual."

Put it in the books so these morons will have something to look at. BETTER YET make it a memory item.

The bigger problem is, the PIC is likely not monitoring the frequency and or his FO, due to the constant chatter, and is oblivious. Unless the offender is the PIC, and then it's even more embarrasing. But if he can carpet dance because its in the FOM, maybe he'll be a little more enthusiastic about enforcing proper flight deck discipline.

But then again, the culprits probably include corporate, 135, or GA people too, so how to clean all that up?

Ever flown on a frequency and NOT been able to recognize the same voice on guard as when he checks on and has multiple communications with ATC? it's not that tough to equate the voices. I'm sure you've had times where someone gets handed off and you've said "finally, that seeeeeeyaaaaaaaaa" guy is gone ;)

Usually it's mainline calling ops on 121.5
