Silver Airways - Outstation Basing

It's not a pride thing. It's if the DEC's could downgrade and keep captain pay I'm sure some would stay. Most DEC's need to grow economically. Why would DEC's stay at Silver when they can go to Horizon or Air Wisconsin and make more money being a FO? And they could be based in real cities.

Horizon's upgrade time is redic... Get used to that right seat... And again they've gotten Silver first year captain pay for one year.. Its not like theyve built an empire... To each their own... Just sayn if theyre here for PIC its still a shorter wait...
And the real city argument is getting old...

Old?!?!?! How is that getting old??? Lets get real here. More than half of our pilots commute and being based in Lower Bum****** is ridiculous. Airline management with any brains would realize that hub basing is much more efficient in a variety of ways. I'm sure it would attract more pilots and make the current pilots QOL much better.

Living in a terrible outstation based city was bad but the main motivator to leave was the commute. It's pretty sad that the average commute for me was 12 hours. Bring in the lack of commutable lines and a 14 day off line became 7.

You lose part of your soul on each leg of a 4 leg commute.

Ive said it before... This place isnt for everybody... There are more people that like it the way it is than not... And if it made SOO much sense going to hub basing why isnt that way now?
Oh thats right, because the people who get paid more than any of us to make educated business decisions are idiots...

Voted this is half the reason why I left and I'm going to another carrier who has outstation basing, but not nearly in the same capacity as Silvers.

I see what you did there lol
|
The pun was intended. Lol! I hope you enjoy it there. I also believe you will enjoy making 2x the amount of money 2nd year there than you saw at Silver.
|
Cruz .....like i said , You ll still be in the right seat for me when JB and Alaska merge ..... Lol
|
The #1 reason people leave Silver is because of outstation basing.
|
Carl....I was gonna get up this morning and put all kinds of effort into exactly this poll....then you beat me to it!
I'm watchin' you haha |
I did a Bradford sentence. I made the best of it but anyone that thinks out station basing is a good idea for crew quality of life is kinda crazy. I would love to know any of the positives. And if you already lived in meridian before applying to silver that doesn't count.

There are people voting here that arent part of Silvers pilot group.
People who live in base arent automatically indifferent if Hub basing threatens their base. People who live in a hub now may still want real hub basing so they can have a line not just reserve... The parameters of this poll may warp the outcome... |
Silver Airways - Outstation Basing
I think we all know where I stand on this issue!
|
Silver Airways - Outstation Basing
Recommend new parameters and I will work with the Moderators to make some adjustments.
|
I don't think that kind of poll would exist here.
You could change the options to say (not a silver employee but wanted to see the votes) |
If you are from an out-station base and want to live there it's awesome. If not, it sucks. There is no reasonable way to commute to most out stations. The vast majority of pilots commute. Especially pilots early in their careers. Silver is not going to be able to recruit pilots outside of Florida with their current system in today's hiring environment. If Silver wants to remain a small Florida/Bahamas operation then the current basing will probably work for them. If they have any desire to grow outside of Florida then they better get the Gulfstream stank off of them and act like a real airline. I'm not saying that every pilot has to be based in a mega-hub, but they at least have to base pilots in places with reasonable options for commuting. For example, I don't think everyone in the northeast would have to be based in IAD, but they should at least be based in places like CLE, BUF, PIT, DTW, etc.
|
Where's the vote for home base and they commute you, THEN they would understand; none of this "who else flys out of Duj because we are broke? Ummm.... NetJets. Hang on I'm going to see if we can deadhead you on them..... Never mind they are too much! Can you drive?"
|
Silver Airways - Outstation Basing
The vote is not for your preference, it's merely an opinion poll. Although, the NetJets deadhead story is a classic :)

While I'm a huge supporter of hub basing, it won't happen any time soon. Our northern ops is funded by EAS which in turn controls the flight schedule to/from the out stations. You need a flight out early enough to catch the morning bank of departures out of the hub, and an evening flight late enough to allow people to connect from the evening bank of arrivals at the hub. The only way I see it working (with new rest rules nonetheless) is overnighting 2 crews or standup overnights. I'm curious how Colgan did bit, any of you guys care to chime in?
|
pkb, ckb, aoo and bkw and shd went back and forth between stand ups and overnighting 2 crews, at one time jst and bkw were pilot bases and ckb and pkb were flight attendant bases. way back in the day shd and aoo were beech bases.

Outstation basing works fine when you have an endless supply of 250hr Fo's who will put up with this sh*t and if you don't think it's **** than go talk to someone based in Greenville and ask them about the brown water they bath in. Every outstation and I have visited them all, has ZERO comutiabilty and you will burn at least 2 of your 11-13 days off commuting in between your trips.
As has been pointed out by others it's a buyers market for FO's and if the company wants to keep and attract these people than they have to move to Hub basing. Colgan did and Piedmont and Commutair now do it with very silmilar routes so it's not as though it can't be done. |
Out stations stink no qol
