Dumb non-rev question for you gurus....
 

Can a person list non-rev but buy a ticket say on Expedia in case the flight fills up? Expedia is refundable within 24 hrs. but the idea seems too good to be true. I think I read somewhere once that a person can't hold a ticket and a standby listing at the same time. Anyone know?

If you are flying on your own airline then typically yes this will be against the rules. If your jumpseating on another carrier then it is just unethical to some.

Every airline I've worked for prohibitated this and considered it an abuse of priveleges with possible loss of non-rev benefits... And I think it's very easy for the gate agent to see the two seperate lisitngs.. Not sure if cancelling 24 hrs prior would make a difference on the gate agents screens??? But.......... it may work a few times, doubt it would work long term without someone noticing.

It is too easy to be true.. I'm sure people have tried, but there's a reason pilots/FA's aren't doing this on a regular basis...

Always against the rules to be revenue and nonrevenue listed for the same flight but I've had refundable tix for the 3 pm Hnl to lax many times as I sat on standby at 8 am and 11 am on the same route.

you will get your travel benefits revoked if the gate agent notices. maybe even fired.

Legal to buy a ticket on a later flight, but don't even think of listing for a flight you bought a ticket for.

If its your own airline, that's just silly. If another airline, why not buy the ticket, if it looks good within your cancelation window, cancel. Then just walk up and ask for a Jumpseat. There shouldn't be anything wrong with that.

Just make sure you are not "listed" as non rev or jumpseat at the same time you "own" a seat for that flight. But if you canceled your revenue reservation and walk up to the gate for a Jumpseat, I can't see anything wrong with that.

I imagine that is still viewed as blocking a seat for yourself.. I'm not sure if the OP is speaking about jumpseating or a family member on pass benefits.. In either case, I would be very careful not to jeopardize the reciprocal agreement that your airline has.. Otherwise you risk ruining the flight benefits everyone has..

You're right, that is a dumb question.

Every single airline clearly prohibits what you describe in their non-rev guidelines, which you should have read and agreed to. It is common knowledge that you can't do this. So I suspect either you're trolling, or don't really work for an airline. Even a newhire on day 1 should know this is illegal!
