Regional flights
 

I was talking to my old CFI who flies for NetJets and he was telling me how he loves it because he's one week on and one week off. He leaves waco, drives to DFW, flies for a week where they put him in hotels ect., then at the end of the week he comes back home.

How to regionals compare? Do you always endup where you started so you stay at your own home or is it comon to be gone for several days and housed by the company?

Normally 2 to 4 day trips, with overnights every night. We're guaranteed 10 days off/month on reserve and 11 on the line.

some regionals, mostly turboprops and maybe very few senior lines at RJ companies have you start and end at your home base everyday.

Most other lines have you starting and ending back at your home base every 2, 3, 4, or even 5 days. Thats why its called a "trip". They put you up in a hotel when your not at your homebase (unless its mesa they may ask you to sleep in the plane)

but i hope that your not just figuring this stuff out as a CFI, cause as you can see it can be a real burden to having a family

I knew a family was something that would have to wait. You don't move to a Texas/Mexico border town looking for Mrs. Right..... Career advancement.

As far as figuring this out as a CFI... I've never worked for a regional before.

When I was a senior RJ Captain, I never did "day trips". I didn't like them. Too much driving in traffic. Too much time with the wife.:D They had senior day trip lines and junior ones (less days off). I prefered the four day trips and the occasional 3 day (they were rare). I worked four on and three off. Now I work 3 on and 3 off in the 757. I still avoid day trips. I drive 1:20 each way to work. Too much traffic and gas. Everyone wants something different and most airlines give you options in the schedules.

I lived 15 minutes from Dulles Airport and I still didn't like day trips. 10-15 minutes drive, the park, wait 5 minutes for the bus, another 5 minutes to get to the terminal, 5 more to go through security (if you were lucky), then 5-10 minutes to get out to the midfield concourse where the crew room was. After you were done, it was the entire thing in reverse.

The only time I enjoyed day trips was when flying charter trips, which left from the company hangar... drive right to the hangar, park 40' from the plane, check in (no security or shuttle busses or other junk) and right out and on the way...

Or the a/c doesnt break, and unfortuanelty, they are always broken

Yeah a day trip is too much like a real job.
