iPad EFBs?
Quick question about regionals with approval for using iPads as EFBs. First, I am not a regional pilot yet, but I will be starting to interview in the next few months.
I have made the decision to replace my current iPad 2 with a mini. So my question is.......of the carriers that have iPad EFBs, are the minis approved for use as well? or would be purchasing a mini be a waste? I am not basing my purchase solely on this alone, but it would be nice to know if I end up at a carrier that uses iPads. |

Take a job at Expressjet, you won't have to worry about it.
|
Go to Cape Air.
|
Yes, we can use the mini as well at whiskey. Final approval for all the "iPad air" models is happening right now.

iPad EFBs?
You should not be using your personal device as a EFB.

Which regionals actually provide the iPads to each pilot ?
I know american mainline is but hadn't heard of any regionals. Thanks |

Major components such as motherboards, processors, Random-Access Memory (RAM), video cards, hard drives, power supplies, and connections (modem, wireless, etc.) must be configuration controlled. Any change to these components will require the EFB to be reevaluated to demonstrate that the EFB still meets its intended function, non-interference, and reliability requirements. Figure 4-76, Hardware Description Template, is a template that has been provided to facilitate the documentation of these components. NOTE: For permanently sealed devices, use the manufacturer and model or manufacturer and part number from Figure 4-76 for configuration control of these devices. A. Display. The following display requirements are specified when a Type B software application is available on an EFB during certain critical phases of flight (e.g., taxi, takeoff, approach, and landing). 1) Legibility. The screen size and resolution must be proven to display information in a comparable manner to the aeronautical charts and data it is intended to replace. The screen must display an approach chart in an acceptable aeronautical chart format similar to a paper approach chart. The screen must be large enough to show an entire instrument approach procedure (IAP) chart at once with the equivalent degree of legibility and clarity as a paper chart. This requirement is not meant to preclude panning and zooming features but is intended to prevent a workload increase during the approach phase of flight. Alternate representations of approach charts will need to be evaluated and approved by the FSB process for functionality and human factors. |

But I will say there is a regional that is going to put iPads in every one of their airplanes by the end of 2014. They won't leave the plane. That's all I can say, but it's a done deal. He's talking about Republic or uh Shuttle if not at all 3 certs. |

Only the regular iPad 1-4 are approved at Mesa. Any other regional carriers actually approved right now? Haven't seen/heard of any.

If you do decide to buy an iPad to use as an EFB I personally suggest the latest iPad you can afford as the Jeppesen app actually sucks (I think it's just code bloat in the app itself) and doesn't run well on older iPads Since you do have an iPad 2 use that as you already have it. All you need is around 2GB for the app. And just put up with the slow performance of the jepp app. If you want a mini, buy one for your personal use. |

Which ever one doesnt give you SJS. Also, do not waste your personal money on a regional.

ExpressJet is currently is the testing phase and the pilot group is being told we should have them by summer. The company is providing the iPads to the pilots.

Horizon issues Ipads to all pilots. The company issued Ipad 4s back in July, and all pilots are required to have them for every flight. Most people I talk with find it more of a nuisance than helpful, since they must be charged at least 50% prior to each leg, updated prior to starting each trip, and you are not allowed to leave it 'unattended' (cant leave it in your bag in the crew room while you go find food, you are supposed to take it with you). The company still hasn't gotten the FAA approval to remove the paper manuals yet so those need to be updated and carried as well (was supposed to happen back in September and haven't heard any recent updates).
The company says you can have personal apps on the ipad (just no personal email), but there is a 'big brother' tracking software that sends data to the company on your usage, not sure exactly what or how it works, but most pilots dont put anything on the company ipad other than the required company material and carry their own personal ipad with them as well. |

I didn't read "same size" in the FAA guidance you quoted. If it's as legible and clear, it appears to meet that specification. . |

I guess you missed the part where he said they still have to carry all of their paper charts and manuals.

Sorry, I must not have made that part very clear. The ipads will be great, if and when we no longer have to carry any paper. Currently, we still have to carry all of our paper manuals and jepp charts in addition to the company ipad. At some point we will be losing the paper flight ops and standards manuals, but there have been no recent talk as to when that my be. Even then we will still have to carry all of our paper Jeps. We do NOT have Jeps on the ipads. The company has said several times they wont be putting jeps on the Ipads anytime in the foreseeable future. So for now at least the ipads are more trouble then they are worth. |

I picked up one of these for $80 new on ebay: myCharge - Hub 9000 This one has a USB and a lightning port so you can charge your ipad and phone at the same time. It's good for a full 0-100% ipad charge and probably 2 full cycles on an iPhone 5. As for updates, I couldn't imagine those would be a problem. They take about 2 minutes and only come out about once every ten days. Just check it when you get up in the morning, problem solved. |
We have minis.

iPad EFBs?
I did a side by side comparison the other day of the Jepp app on an original (non-retina display) Mini and an Air, and the difference in legibility and clarity was substantially in the Air's favor. I still think the Mini is the perfect form factor though, and am looking forward to seeing how charts look on one with a retina display.
