TSA Jan 2nd Class

Just wondering if anyone else here is going to be in that class…

btwissel 12-21-2006 03:33 AM

i'll be there

flynavyj 12-21-2006 06:33 AM

welcome to the club boys....you'll love it. lol.

freezingflyboy 12-21-2006 06:40 AM

I think its best if you just walk in to the training center on day 1 with your pants around your ankles and the lube (if you remember because HK sure won't) in your hand... Saves management the time.

JoeyMeatballs 12-21-2006 07:25 AM

hahaha thats awesome, I gotta buy you a beer

I'll keep that in mind. I start a trip tomorrow thats mostly through CLE and EWR:D

DMEarc 12-21-2006 08:13 AM

What were your times guys?

diamnd15 12-21-2006 08:48 AM

mine was 1200/100, but there were people there with around 700/50 and someone also said someone had gotten hired with around 25 multi.

btwissel 12-21-2006 08:49 AM

1000/35, but it was through a bridge program with Purdue

diamnd15 12-21-2006 07:02 PM

does anyone know of a crashpad in stl?

flynavyj 12-21-2006 09:23 PM

believe the website is stlcrashpads.com, there's a place called the pilot projects just across from flt. safety, not the best neighborhood, (one guy had his car broken into there, but...its a place to crash)....

Oh no, a purdue guy, don't let it get to ur head man...there've been plenty of people who've gotten in with similar and less time, and done so without a bridge program. Just depends on how desperate they are on what day...had a buddy get turned down with 900/400 on a dec. 12 interview.

diamnd15 12-21-2006 10:46 PM

well gave them a call she said she doesnt know if theres goin to be an open room, and that she would call me back. anyone know of some other suggestions...is it possible to get a cheap apartment somewhere close to the airport and get around without a car?

POPA 12-22-2006 05:30 AM

I just moved out of my crashpad a week ago; PM me if you want a phone number to call for it.

flyerfly 12-22-2006 12:37 PM

Study hard guys...It ain't a walk in the park. Just ask the November class. Make sure this is the airline for you before you get into it.

Hes not kidding. 7 out of about 40 of the last 2 classes failed out before they even got to the sim...

Pilotpip 12-22-2006 02:10 PM

You're going to have a hard time getting around without a car in STL. I'm from the neighborhood near Lambert. I don't live there anymore and have no desire to.

flynavyj 12-22-2006 06:37 PM

was talking to an FO today who was in the oct. class, said that they ended up losing a total of 7 people outta 25...works out to around 30% which is awefully high, i thought out 15% washout was a big number....sheesh.

diamnd15 12-22-2006 10:34 PM

who are the types that dont mae it? i know u have to study more than just a lot, but what more advice could u give a newbee. i just got a room with other tsa pilots and a few guys that r going to be in my class, would that be somewhat of a helper

flynavyj 12-22-2006 10:46 PM

that'll definatley help you out...key thing is to cooperate and graduate...that's the name of the game. Do your best to study as a group as often as possible, bounce ideas back and forth, and let each other clear up the others confusion. Given that the majority of your class is probably CFI's there'll be plenty of different ways to "see" the answer, which will simplify your learning experience.

When u first start groundschool, study limitations and memory items, get them down cold, then review them everynite before you go to bed...that'll get you basically set for your oral (as long as you can get the systems down pretty pat too). Flows will be important, but not so much so until you get to the SIM, when you get there, you should have your powerup flow down, along with your recieving (basically the stuff that'll help you get off the ground and practice flying the most). Practice in the paper tiger as much as you can, however, when you finally sit in the cockpit of te box, it'll seem totally different, (switches really move, and when they do something really happens, it'll be the same transisiotn from the sim to the airplane, except now you'll be worried about breaking something). That's the basic jist, anything else, just ask.

reelbigchair 12-23-2006 04:46 AM

#1 priority, memory items, limitations
#2 systems knowledge, particularly for the oral, don't worry too much about the writtens
#3 profiles
#4 GOM
#5 flows you can focus more on these after you get past your oral

UNDGUY 12-23-2006 05:14 AM

Training

Will the company send you the memory items, limitations, and system information before you attend class? Is it possible to get that information even if the company won't send it to you, or do you have to learn it within the two weeks or whatever that is alotted during training? If not Trans States, what about other companies policies on this? I know Piedmont is a bit different with their AQP program. I think I may like that more so I'm not so rushed to learn.

Thanks

reevesofskyking 12-23-2006 07:28 AM

you will be in class a couple of days before you get all of you manuals.

you dont get your systems manual until you start systems.
Dont worry about it, it really does come at you at the right speed through training.

reeves

diamnd15 12-23-2006 07:49 AM

hey guys thanks a lot. but what about some of the other little things like jepps, uniforms, etc, does tsa pay or help pay for most of that kind of stuff.

atooraya 12-23-2006 10:48 AM

TSA will pay for the Jepps, SOP, GOM and your brass.

You pay $20/mo for your uniform, but they give you $20/mo for dry cleaning, so it kinda works out.

Your manuals are given to you about 3 or 4 days into class, and your systems book is given to you when you start the systems class, about 10 days into it.

Pace yourself. Dont memorize systems when you're trying to work on indoc, or general operating subjects. It's not a race.

When you get your SOP though, memorize section 3 like the back of your hand. It's memory items (26) and limitations

diamnd15 12-23-2006 01:34 PM

what is...your brass?

TSA will pay for the Jepps, SOP, GOM and your brass

The TSA hat and jacket metal is for American and United while US Airways has their own stuff.

don't worry, not gonna. i was just assuming it's a bridge because they take Purdue grads with less than the stated mins. sounds better in my head than "they were just that desperate."

Koolaidman 12-24-2006 12:50 AM

Last time I checked, they give you all the writtens in ground school at some point in time, either through the gouges or the day before the instructor goes through them.

Prepare for an oral, study flows through indoc as that should be the easiest test. I think a few days of flows before sim would work fine, just have an IDEA of what to do, they WILL work with you on those! My personal suggestion is to know the autopilot buttons as best as you can! Also, 1/2 your pph will give you an exact airspeed! EXAMPLE - 1000 pph per side = 200 KIAS. Best gouge ever! Add about 200 pph for flaps! 65% N1 on an ILS works pretty dam* good as well! EMB's kick a**! Have fun!

flyerfly 12-24-2006 07:34 AM

The advice on training is a given memory items and all that good stuff. I have a great gouge for Darin Carrol but here is a tip they didn't tell you. DO NOT STUDY GOUGES. They examinars are well aware that the Oct and Nov class only studied gouges. Those that only studied gouges FAILED. You cannot do that. Like said before get with a group and study. Make flash cards because systems is not easy at all.

If you don't know the answers DO NOT TALK just say I don't know. More than a handfull of guys fail just because they talked themselves into a hole. As far as the oral goes thats all there is to it. Know that Systems manual front and back. The instructors are great and they will prepare you very well but you need to do self study or group study.

I have always found the best way is group study. The class that studies togeather passes togeather. There wasn't one preson I studied with on a daily basis that didn't pass their oral. So get to it. We got our GOM SOP JEPPS and Checklist the first day of class.

diamnd15 12-28-2006 04:12 PM

did most of the people in the nov class get ric as a base, and did anyone get stl?

reevesofskyking 12-28-2006 05:17 PM

I think were very few that got STL, from the ones that I talked to, and our whole class (Dec) got RIC, and from what I have heard it is the next class will be the same, but it is all market demand on where you go though

flynavyj 12-28-2006 07:28 PM

which should be nice, as i won't have to sit hotel reserve our in RIC much longer...although,i shouldn't complain to much, as my paycheck profited highly.

:D

diamnd15 12-28-2006 07:54 PM

well then since it seems like they are very understaffed in ric, will there be a very short reserve time, is it even possible to hold a line out of class

POPA 12-28-2006 08:15 PM

The January bid packet for RIC had 46 hard lines, which is exactly how many FOs were in the base before the October guys got there.
The RIC guys will be sitting reserve, too. The reason they haven't been is because there wasn't manpower for it. Welcome to the club.

AV8ER 12-29-2006 05:26 AM

Everyone in November is going to RIC. Hey, you October guys, how many from your class are in RIC and are hoping to come back to STL. Just trying to see how many are in front of me.
