Travel etiquette for interview

Heading to my first interview next week and have a few questions about travel.

Its space available is it common to get bumped ?

Is a jacket and tie the norm for travel ?

Anything else I should know ?

Thanks

This was the deal for American Eagle, last year:

Dress business casual at a minimum. Sneakers, Jeans, uncollared shirts were expressly verboten.

Shirt and tie may not hurt.

mooney 04-26-2014 05:49 PM

business casual, and act as though the interviewers are watching you from the time you arrive at the airport, to the time you arrive back home after the interview.

flyingmau5 04-26-2014 05:55 PM

You can never overdress for an interview, however, don't wear a tuxedo. :)

FlyJSH 04-26-2014 06:17 PM

People are watching.... assuming it is a good company. Casual business is good. Nice shirt, slacks, tie is not necessary. Pass on the alcohol. If there is a meal, tell the FA that you will pass until the crew gets a meal (some companies do not give the crew meals, they have to wait until all the pax are served). I did that every time I jumpseated. It may not get you hired, but it is a courtesy that the crew will remember.

In short, you are a guest. Be nice and nondescript.

Good luck.

I wore my suit during travel to all of my interviews. You look professional during travel and its easier to wear the suit and keep it nice rather then pack it. And I agree, interview begins when you enter the airport.

minimwage4 04-26-2014 06:31 PM

You're overthinking this. Just show up on time. No jeans.

wear this and your good to go…the job is practically yours

flyguy94 04-26-2014 07:01 PM

I wore flip flops and shorts to my interview. The president of flight ops happened to be on my flight. I still got the job but thought I was done for. Definitely will be dressing up for future flights to interviews.

What Zivko said wear your interview suit... Best way to insure you will have it when you get there and it will be clean. Just my opinion

JamesNoBrakes 04-26-2014 08:45 PM

Just blend in.

Drive to the interview.

cfii2007 04-27-2014 05:08 AM

If the airline is paying for the ticket.....business casual.

If it's on your dime....well, you can show up naked if you want, but probably won't make it past TSA.

sargeanb 04-27-2014 04:25 PM

I'll tell you one thing....DONT CHECK YOUR BAG. I did it, still being new to the airline thing. Bag got lost in Charlotte and had to sit around Indy for hours waiting for the next flight to come in.

NovemberBravo 04-28-2014 12:43 AM

Business casual, no need to complicate it. But I refuse to believe you wont get a job at a region because you wore jeans and a t-shirt.

There are white collar pilots and there are blue collar pilots... Don't be a blue collar pilot.

if you do wear your interview suit on the plane, hope the 2 year old next to you doesn't accidentally spill his orange juice all over you ;)

Yep, I would NOT wear your interview suit on the plane- I didn't even wear my interview shoes. Put it all in a hang-up bag. I wore nice khakis, a long sleeve shirt, and tie on my non-revs to interview.

bedrock 04-28-2014 11:37 AM

I second using a garment bag. Go business casual, and take the suit in the garment bag. You can always get a lightly packed garment bag on board. Bring a soft-sided briefcase that will fit under the seat for any other things. I'd also bring some kind of protein snacks like beef jerky and have enough room in the bag for a water bottle. It's going to be a very long day.

21,000 dollar a year regional job interview, sweatpants and an old T shirt.

rickair7777 04-28-2014 12:01 PM

As others have said, business casual unless you're paying your own way on SWA. Nonrevs often get seated in the same area so you who knows who you might be next to. Don't wear a suit on the plane.

Other than that, just be polite to everybody...nobody expects an applicant to know nonrev/JS etiquette.

Everybody who is from out-of-town probably stays at the company hotel, including interviewers, sim instructors, pilots in training, pilots on overnight, etc.

^^^Very true

This, did you ever walk around the regional side gates at CLT, biggest bunch of slobs i have ever seen. I swear i just saw what i think was a PSA pilot wearing high flood pants with white ankle socks. I should have taken a picture. So whatever you decide to dress in, consider yourself overdressed. Regional airline pilot job is like getting a job at your local McDonalds, they will hire pretty much anyone nowadays.

JungleBus 04-28-2014 07:08 PM

Fun story, early 2004 I had an interview at TSA. Was a 135 freight guy at the time and had a friend killed flying 135 freight so decided it was a good time to head to the regionals. Wore my suit to STL. Stayed in the HoJo that night, & headed down to the bar because I'd been to that HoJo bar a number of times while interning at TWA & had some good memories. Talked to a few local bubbas, didn't tell anyone I was there for an interview with an airline. Next morning I show up for the interview and among the interview panel recognized several faces from the night before, though nobody I had talked to. I thought I did very well on the interview. I ended up NOT getting the job offer, only interview in my life I didn't get hired, and at a notoriously easy interview at the time.

Wrinkle is that the morning of the interview I got an interview offer at Horizon, which I'd been trying to get into for ~ a year. So did I pis$ someone off at the bar who remembered me, or fail to charm someone on the commute in - or was I that clearly not into it because of the QX offer? I dunno, still kinda wondering about that one, while at the same time thanking my lucky stars that I didn't get into TSA as I would have been screwed by the GoJet debacle.

minimwage4 04-28-2014 08:26 PM

Not saying you did it but worst thing to do when interviewing is having that "if I don't get this job at least I have another..." mentality. That will really come across to the panel.

Agreed, I suspect that's what they saw.

...shows poor character, always dress for success regardless of the job/pay!!!

if it is a dead end job, don't apply and waste your time!

Bumper 05-08-2014 01:03 PM

Thanks for all the input, travel docs said business attire on the plane and during interview so had to wear suit on the plane but pressed it that everning before the interview.

I was surpised one guy wasnt wearing a coat or tie at the interview, just kaki pants and a button up shirt.

Well don't be, he probably didn't get the job. Nice suit a must at the interview.

Just wear business casual while commuting. Tucked in polo/shirt and slacks/khakis. Don't wear jeans or the gate nazi's will get you...

That's not true, they hire guys that don't wear a suit. I know.. I was one. Just smile, be yourself, do as they say and don't say anything stupid like I see myself at FedEx in a few years.. and you'll be ok!

I know; I interviewed at GoJet in January 2012 and the Assistant Chief Pilot actually insulted the College I graduated from, I was instantly turned off and gave them the TBNT reply. It may have had something to do with the fact I had more time crossing the threshold than he had in diapers.
