Plantronics Headset

Anyone out there have any experience with Plantronics headsets? Any model that you would recommend for a high-noise environment (ERJ)?

I currently use Bose because of the noise in the Bro (Emb-120). I am almost curious what Jet pilots use. I love my Bose but when I move to the Jet I would like something that isn't so large and doesn't flatten my hair.

I currently fly the ERJ and a lot of guys use Bose, Telex, or the DCs that are in the airplane. It may be a jet but its freaking loud!:D

I just asked about Plantronics because my parents got me one for Xmas but I don't think its going to perform well in the jungle jet.

Yes.

No.

Plantronics reps set up a display in our pilot operations center to peddle their wares. They had the MS200, MS250, and MS260 on display (I think), and were holding a drawing to give away free headsets (also known as harvesting personal information). I asked them what headset Plantronics makes for a high-noise environment (I was flying the 727). Their answer: none. Don't confuse "noise-canceling microphone" with "Active Noise Reduction."

I won a free MS200, which I now use in the DC-10. It's a great headset, but obviously not appropriate for high-noise environments.

For noise, nothing beats the Bose Aviation Headset X.

Nothing.

Thanks TonyC. That was kind of my assessment as well having looked over their product line. My parents got me the MS-260 which is light and compact and all that. But I think if I used it in the ERJ I would fail my next medical because of hearing.

What would you consider high Noise Tonyc? I have been eye-balling the MS200 for a while. Right now I fly a Lear 45 part time and use the molded earpiece with the small mic clipped to it (plantronics or telex I think). But the MS200 headset looked a bit more comfy. After a 3 1/2 - 4 hour leg having the earpice in starts to bug a little. But I still can't see using a full 2 earcup headset in any jet.

Thanks

I rode on an RJ for the first time in my life last month (it was an ERJ). I had earplugs in my ears but for the five minutes in cruise that I took them out, I felt like I was going deaf more every minute! Wow the noise in that ERJ is out of control. But then again I am more sensitive to my ears than most people I know.

Not sure if I can justify the $1,000 for the Bose just yet. I'd certainly like to try one on in flight sometime to get a true sample of how it does with noise and comfort.

Any jet? The 727 is pretty noisy, especially above Mach .80. ;)

I'd say if there's any need for noise reduction or noise cancelling, the Plantronics MS200 won't cut it. But if you're in an environment where a single earpiece and no earplugs/earmuffs is required, the MS200 should work nicely.

If you consider that hearing loss is cumulative, and permanent, it is most definitely worth the low monthly interest-free payments.

And, if you don't like 'em, send 'em back. 30 day trial period.

How can you lose?

Thanks TonyC, I might have to give the MS200 a go. My up front jet time is limited to Lears 25/45, but it's hard to believe other jets are much more noisy. Must be those window wipers :D

Thanks agian

That is the stuff I need to read. I'm slowly convincing myself that the purchase would make sense.

If they're durable and would last a looong time I think I'll get them.
