Go while they're hiring. ASA/SkyWest seems secure now. But with those times you can go anywhere.

Why would you care is an AF pilot loses his slot? It's not OK if he misses his, but it is OK if you miss yours.

XJT isn't the place to go right now. (Just my opinion)

Not true :) There is always something to be learned from those who have traveled the path before you. It's because of the recommendations of people here that I held out and ended up at the current place I'm at. I was fresh out of college and stupid enough to almost fly anywhere and after a few pep talks I held out for something better and here I am.

I think you missed my point. Gathering information is key, but in the end always do what is right for you. For the same reasons here you are on the bottom of the seniority list where ever you go.

With your times there are frieght operators you could most likely be captain at in a very short time. That would be a viable position unless your goal is too fly at regional for any reason.

I don't think you're stupid at all. I stayed at my CFI job which I loved and paid me (salaried!) twice as much as any 1st year FO at any regional until I had about 1800TT and 335 Multi. Home every night, weekends off, and a very easy schedule. Nothing but multi flights and checkrides with the occasional CFI thrown in there to make it look like "work". The main reason I left was a shift in management and it's hard to build multi turbine in a seminole ;) Enjoy the ride now while you can, cuz my QOL took a nose dive come regional time.

I always thought freight guys wanted around 1000 multi. I'll have to look into them more. Does freight ever have jumpseat agreements?

The only thing i am going to say is Seniority is EVERYTHING in this business. If you think long term you want to be with the airlines than good god get in as soon as possible. Just for instance right now at XJT we are hiring 80 new hires a month. By waiting till April then you do the math on how many people would be a head of you. I don't know where you want to work but thats just whats going on at my airline. Good luck with your decisions.

I agree with him, and from most of the people in the majors that I've spoken with, they agree that Seniority is EVERYTHING. Its not just your pay, but its your QOL.

I came across the same situation, and I was asked to stay at a certain flight school, even offered a guarantee of pay per month, but after thinking about it long term, my QOL in the future is much more important than helping my old boss out by staying around. Plus I can deal with some crappy QOL stuff for now since it will make things that much better in the end.

I agree, it sounds like you have it pretty good at the moment. I would put all my focus in borrowing that merlin and getting my twin time up over 150 or so. It will open some doors.

In my limited time in this industry, it seems like regionals are a frickin rollercoaster. Right now people are hiring like crazy, in six months they may still be hiring....or it could all go to poo. The best regional now might be the one spinning down the toilet in a year. Who knows really.

But if it was me (and it was me, except I was flying a king air)... enjoy it but keep your eyes wide open for job openings you would enjoy. Do not, DO NOT, hold off your career advancement to help your boss. That is a big no no.

AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Freight will want 1200 for jet jobs.

XtremeF150 01-27-2007 07:10 PM

They only want 1200 TT because of most having 135 min's....Here's another thought, if you don't mind moving around the world then you could get 2000 TT and take a SO position at Cathay Pacfic. I was in a very similiar position as you about a year ago. I had stayed on as an instructor at one of the largest flight school's in the nation for about 3 years and had over 3000 TT and over 1000 turbine PIC. I THOUGHT that I would be able to skip the regional's and start at a major. In reality, not having any Extremely good connections means that the time I had was useless. In fact several regionals refused to interview me due to my high times. I have since spent a year getting 121 PIC time and hope to have a better job very soon. If i could go back a year though I would definately go the cargo route instead. Those guys seem to have a lot of fun and to answer your question, yes most of them do have jumpseat agreements or even CASS in many cases.

Do you really consider cathay a possibility. Location means nothing to me.

yea I agree, the best contract in the regionals, one of the best QOL, one of the largest fleets in the regionals, the most destinations, the most opportunities, and a new RFP that may or may not have been announced yet I'm not sure. O yea, they have the highest pay in the regionals to date and a managment that treats the pilots better than any other regional that I've ever heard of. Yea, I think Colgan would have been the place to go. Steer clear of XJT because they actually had the balls to tell their biggest dependent that they didn't need them and lost a few airplanes.
