ASA Commutable??
Would it be commutable to live in Arizona and commute to work at ASA? (presuming ATL as the junior base?)
|
I've heard and read that it would be a tough commute, especially sitting on reserve. I've asked the same question about commuting from HOU or IAH and the replies have steered me in the direction of finding a low cost place in ATL (assuming I get based there) or a crashpad and live there until I hold a line. Shouldn't be a bad bet seeing as the reserve time is about 8 months. I do have a ton of time to think about what I'll do for sure, but his is just my .02. Apparently you get a 2 hour notice to get to the airport for a flight, the flights out of IAH and HOU are about 2 hours. If timed right, they may work, but I don't think I'm going to chance it.

That is the dumbest idea I have ever heard (no offense!). When you are on reserve, you better at least be in the same state as the airport you are working out of! Not to mention, you'd have to live in the terminal at IAH or HOU in order to actually catch the flights that leave, and then hope to god those flights aren't delayed due to weather or cancel, or heaven forbid you get denied a seat. |
2-hour callout means two hours from the time they call you until the time you are standing in the crew room checking in. There is no way in hell you are going to take a two hour flight on reserve and keep your job!!!
2-Hour callout in ATL means being within about a 30-60 minute drive of the airport, tops. |

Maybe you should read the entire post before you go off on what I was saying. I didn't say that if I work there I'd commute to ATL from IAH or HOU. With a 2 hour call out and 2 hour flights to the airport, my cojones aren't big enough to put my job in jeopardy. I don't work there, I plan to, but if I do, I'll definitely live in close proximity to the airport I'm based at.

You can commute. It is not a big deal. I would recommend a crash pad in ATL until you can hold a good line. it gives you the ability to relax while your are waiting for a call on reserve.
There is language in the TA that would allow a 12 hr call out. Do not count on that until it is signed by pilot group. There are many guys and gals that commutte. It is not at easy as some places, but many do not have any trouble at all. |
