Cell choice

Which would you prefer, if you could get a free one tomorrow? Are there any issues with the phone you have now and your regional software/apps? I hear IOS handles some things better than AOS. If so, what? And with any problems you have had, what app is giving you problems, and which airline uses it?

TMobile doesn't have the best coverage domestically, but they offer free international data and texts:

The only requirement to get a job at Mesa. Enough minutes to "interview".

BobJenkins 01-09-2016 07:48 PM

Oh heck. Never mind. Again.

C'mon Blob. Let her rip.

I'm still using a flip phone. I'm in a spot now where it seems a smart phone would be helpful in the airline environment, checking flights, schedules weather, etc. but I don't want to become a slave to my phone where I need it to function either.

GoHomeLeg 01-09-2016 08:40 PM

Not sure if it's phone specific with verizon bit they just activated WiFi calling on my s6 edge. This allows me to make calls when I'm out of the country and not have to worry about roaming.

Android for me...more functionality for sure. I had 2 iPhones in the past and they were easy to use but lacked in ability. When it came time to buy a tablet I couldn't be happier with the Android and I wish we were going to that for the company provided tablets coming soon.

WakeWash 01-10-2016 05:57 AM

MetroPCS. Or the free one Obama gave me for being a broke regional FO

FlameNSky 01-10-2016 06:03 AM

I use Consumer Cellular. Mostly because their commercials are super swell and spiffy. And the people that use them seem really gay*.

Thanks for all the input folks!!

The one thing I did not see was if anyone had any issues using company apps or websites on a particular OS? For example, an app that won't work well on Android phones, but Apple works just fine, or vice versa?

I personally found Envoy's MobileCCI slow and cumbersome on Android. I made the switch to iPhone last year and part of that was peaking over coworker's shoulders and noticing on their iOS devices that MobileCCI was loading much faster and more smoothly. I am actually happy with the switch.

Also using our mobileFOS device, the programmable pf keys which make a simple script will work on an iOS device but seems to have major issues with Android.

Having information at your finger tips is becoming a slave? Sure you might not need passrider.com or your id90 page available to you in your pocket to function, but trust me, that access to that stuff so readily is a blessing when it hits the fan while non rev traveling

Android on Google Fi (T-mo + Sprint + Wifi). Last bill $25+tax Roams almost anywhere free. Nexus 6P

Beeper and a sack of quarters. That's how I roll always a payphone around.

BobJenkins 01-14-2016 08:01 AM

I haven't seen a pay phone since I was in Germany in 1994. Do they still have working ones here?

I refused to use my cell at my regional and routinely used pay phones inside the terminal to call MX on write-ups if the gate's phone didn't work.

My Android phone has worked well on AA's FOS site, not sure what the guy above was referring to. Maybe he had an older phone.

I wouldn't base my phone decision on the use of company web sites, personally.

Cricket offers a good nationwide plan for $35/month using AT&T towers.

adspilot 01-14-2016 10:48 AM

I use Trac Phone. I was on AT&T for about a decade. Tmobile for a year and a half. This works just as good or better that either of them. I was paying 180/210 for those plans with my wife. Now its just 85 for the both of us!!

Day4mx 01-14-2016 12:17 PM

Jitterbug.

Cricket for $35/month - includes unlimited talk/text & 2.5G data

A decent unlocked GSM phone on Amazon for ~ $150

that's all I need to spend

Skyvector 01-14-2016 04:57 PM

Go with whichever one fits snugly into your kneeboard. Make sure you leave enough room for a sectional and fuel strainer.

Android! I can replace the battery on my Note 4, upgrade the memory with a Micro SD card. If I want to, add music or movies or any type of files. I can do it from ANY computer and doesn't require the use of Itunes to transfer. I can use Skype or other app to Video chat or Imessage.

I love all that freedom android offers. I've had a couple of them, unfortunately they both bricked in the 1-2 yr range. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Samsung though if going that route.
Old iPhone 4 and ipad2 still running strong after 3yrs never a problem. I will admit I hate iTunes and all that goes with it, but the positives out way it.

Agreed… Cricket is also a good choice.

How do you find the coverage? That was always my concern about those kinds of carriers. I figured that, in order to offer that price, they severely limited the main coverage areas.

BobJenkins 01-15-2016 05:08 PM

Samsung used to have that. Now they are like Apple with no SD and non-replaceable battery.

What phone did you get for $150? I would want a quality smartphone with good battery life.

Cricket is owned by AT&T. Other than a few places that AT&T would roam on another carrier your coverage will be exactly the same as AT&T.

I've had T-Mobile for years and must say as of late their coverage has gotten considerably stronger. Obviously each carrier has their stronger and weaker markets but I find them fantastic almost everywhere I am. Additionally coverage in Canada and Mexico is included at no cost and most plans feature unlimited music streaming and unlimited video streaming. Neither of those count against your data bundle. Additionally you get 5-7GB of hotspot data and and aircraft with Gogo inflight internet you can text for free in the air. I use the hotspot instead of the hotel internet because it's usually a lot faster, I'm using it right now. Also you can use any wifi calling anywhere in the world and it's like being on their native network. I travel a lot internationally and they include throttled 2G free data, 20 cents/per minute, and free text roaming in 120+ countries. They'll even send you a free LTE micro cell spot for your home if you don't have great signal there. Basically a mini tower in your own home.

I've flown with plenty of people who were surprised when I whip out my phone internationally and use it just like I was at home, meanwhile they're keeping their phones off so they don't get screwed by roaming charges.

There is a reason they are adding more than 8 million people a year, it's not the T-Mobile of old.

YMMV

Although it's a bit more expensive than $150. Last year's Google flagship device the Nexus 6 can be bought outright on amazon for $250.

http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Unloc...ywords=nexus+6

It's a used phone but comes with a factory warranty and is still among the best specd phones available. Since it's a "Google" phone it gets the latest updates first, and doesn't have any of the carrier or manufacturer bloat wear that often gets added by the respective android phone manufacturer(Samsung, HTC, etc) add before they push the new updates. It's "vanilla" android.

I've had it since it first came out and love it. Still just as fast as anything out there.
