Electronic Logbooks

How are the regionals looking at electronic logbooks at interview? If they are printed out nicely do they still want the original logbooks? Do they prefer them electronically printed out?

I brought both printed and original logbooks. The hiring guys didn't even look at the original logbook.

I think it depends on the airline. The airline applied at last year said I could bring my electronic logbook but they wanted the original paper logbook with all the signed endorsements and checkrides.

CAirBear 03-23-2016 07:36 PM

I just interviewed at a fractional carrier and brought my printed electronic Logbook Pro. It wasn't an issue at all and looks damn good.

Best way to print LG Pro is go to Staples. Mine cost $45 to get printed and bound. Looks great and took maybe 20 mins total.

I'm in the process of converting all my pen and paper into electronic. After seeing how nice a professionally bound electronic logbook looks, I'm embarrassed I ever showed up to an interview with my old ones. Just curious, you guys have who have been around 121 for a while, how do you log? You log leg by leg, day by day , or just monthly. Anytime I mention I leg by leg log I get crazy looks.

snackysmores 03-23-2016 09:11 PM

I just log each day. TT, SIC, night, and approaches flown by me. Basically anything the airline apps wants.

Does anyone log 'actual instrument'? Why airlineapps would care is beyond me.

I always just did a 10% figure... 5 HR day= .5

For those of you that use Logten pro, were you able to somehow get your "special columns" to print as well? Such as turbine PIC etc or whatever special column you added? When I went to print mine out at Kinko's it only printed out all of the normal columns.

Choose a different report. I used the Jeppesen Pro Pilot for my interview, and while it didnt include TPIC, it did include Turbine/Jet time in its own column. If you want it to show some custom columns youve made, use the dynamic reports under "general". It's no frills and plain, but mirrors exactly what you see on your computer. If that's still not right, email coradine, ive generally heard back from within 2 business days with helpful responses.

Fwiw i also brought my ipad to my interview (tucked away if course) in the case they wanted to know some addl times... ie pic night, lca, etc.

Okay. Thank ya!

sdinkc 03-24-2016 05:19 AM

I recently interviewed and brought both my LogTen Pro book and my originals. They never asked to see my originals. I scanned all of my original endorsements, arranged them on a few pages, and had them in the back of the LTP book. The pilot doing the tech interview commented on that, thought it was a great idea, and that turned into a side discussion on some of the endorsement features within LTP going forward. I used the Jeppesen Pro Pilot format and bought a binder off of Amazon - it was black and a linen/bookcloth type material. This was my first 121 interview so I obviously did not need to worry about adding any extra columns such as TPIC yet!

NetJets for some reason has an instrument time requirement, so i log it for that......just in case.

I log one line per day UNLESS the tail number changes. IE - I always have one tail number per line.

When I pull my trips out of out system at the end of the month its leg by leg, so call me crazy, but that is what I upload to my electronic logbook.

Lots of people use Logtenpro, but I'm a Safelog guy myself

Same here I log leg by leg, it's just the way I have always done it. Also I use Logbook Pro it does the job.

For this I just printed a "Totals" page and added it to the back. It totaled all the miscellaneous times a company may be interested in (Turbine/PIC, etc.).

MCCpilotlog. It's awesome. Steep learning curve but it works with Apple OS, iOS, Android and Windows and it's about 100 bucks for life. Great customer service and support.

As far as interviews go...bring the printed electronic copy, when they offer you the job and need signatures, scan and email them if necessary.

ebuhoner 03-24-2016 02:17 PM

I brought both electronic and paper. Turned in the electronic ones, they never asked for the paper ones

It'll largely depend on where you interview, but Envoy requires the original instructor endorsements from when you were getting your ratings--be it on paper or electronic form now. Should your original logbook get lost/stolen/destroyed, they will wait until your full airman file from the FAA comes back to verify checkride failures.

I'll throw my opinion in as well. I use Logbook Pro and pay for the mobile app sync. With how easy and quick it is to log a flight, I just go ahead and do leg by leg. Usually when after we block in I've finished my logbook entry before the first 5 people are off the plane.

I'll look into this. Log ten now requires 75$ per year just to have an electronic logbook. Going to find a better option.

I paid $100 for lifetime access of LogTen Pro on my Mac. If you want it on your phone (up to 5 device) there are subscription options.

Printed mine out in Jepp 13 format and put a binder clip on it. I'll export to the nice leather bound logbook for the majors.

Tester130 12-16-2016 04:20 AM

Due to my military log books not using the same terminology (aircraft commander vs PIC) or not using terms at all (dual received) I ended up transferring my log books over to digital. Ended up with log ten pro due to having a mac at home.

For when I interview, I bring my old military logs as well as a clean printed out one from log ten pro. I let them know that everything in the mostly hand written military ones is in the printed digital one and so far in the two interviews I've had they didn't open the military ones. For printing I splurged and got a binder and paper from Logbook Solutions-Home and then print at home on a laser printer. It looks nice and I like that I can add pages to the log when ever I've flown enough to justify printing more or there is a need such as an interview. A kind of pricey way to go, but I really like the end product and flexibility.

For those looking for a logbook program, I would recommend MCC Pilot Log. One time fee for everything that the other programs charge monthly or yearly for. It runs about $80-90 for a one time fee for the entire program ( cloud storage, phone app, sync between all devices, uploads schedules from most airlines right into the program).

For interviews, just take the logbook with the sign offs and the printed electronic log book.

Bravix 12-17-2016 08:43 PM

In the grueling process of transferring all of my paper records to logbook (in as much of the original detail as possible). Wish I had started this earlier.

At this point, since I'm going 121, is there any reason I should differentiate between cross countries with landings vs point to point cross countries? Or just log it all the same, since I don't think it will matter anymore? I don't think any airlines ask you to split them on applications, do they?

HighFlight 12-17-2016 08:55 PM

Doesn't matter, as long as you have enough X-Cory hours to qualify for an ATP. After you get an ATP, none of the minute details matter all that much.

Clearedhot28 12-19-2016 08:33 AM

I'm on the helo side of the world at the moment, but when I got out of the military I transferred over my military log books to Logten Pro according the FAR/AIM rules since the military does things slightly differently. I took the file from Logten Pro and went to the local Kinko's and had them print out the logbook on nice paper and had put in a binder. Now I just put in a new sheet every couple of months.

When I went to several interviews nobody asked to see the military log books and the logbook I had printed up received several compliments.

That was my recent experience at PSA. They said they appreciated the printout of the ELB.

There appear to be 2 questions being asked here.
1) Do i need two bring my paper logbook to an interview.
2) Which one is best.

My thoughts, as someone who reviews logbooks in interviews :-)
Read carefully what each company has asked for, but in general IF you've used paper in the past; bring it. Demonstrate your check ride experiences and endorsements.
If you've only ever used electronic, fine, as Logten allows endorsements and image attachments. There is no legal requirement to use paper.
If there's anything in your record you want to explain, make sure you have the appropriate 'paper trail'; for example, did you receive additional training after a check ride failure? Was that training logged and the proper AC 61-65x verbage completed?

Logten is becoming the standard, and if your airline allows, it's easy at the start of the month to import your schedule, and just add the actual flight times et al after each leg. The FLICA import is fantastic.

Mr Rumbold 12-28-2016 07:41 AM

I know some captains who've been logbook-free for 10+ years, because they thought they're not going anywhere..
But are now considering a new job- what do they do? Ask the company for records?
Maybe that'll get total time, but you surely can't remember who's leg was who's on a trip from 7 years ago.
