Sheppard Air and new ATP written
Hey guys,
Does Sheppard Air still suffice as a good study tool for the new ATP written? Has anyone taken it recently? I'm about to start training at a regional but they want me to re-take the written because the checkrides won't be done till August. The airline is paying for the ATP-CTP course but the provider does not offer the written so I have to test on my own. Thanks! |
I took it 2 years ago but yeah it got the job done. Would recommend as always with them.

I had to retake mine, used Sheppard. It's updated to reflect the latest questions and material.

The ATP CTP course provides no written test prep. It is a genuine waist of time and money. As far as sheppard when I used it in feb. they did NOT have the newest stuff. And were sending apology emails to customers that the software was not working as well as it had in the past. I used a combo of Sheppard and ASA, neither one has the latest questions. 2 weeks of using both I passed no problem but there was a LOT of stuff I had never seen before.... Hopefully after a couple months they got some more stuff figured out.
Hope that helps |

I also took the ATM in February after using Sheppard. I hadn't seen about 20% of the questions on the "new" exam. When I took it 3 years ago, I had seen all but 2 of the questions and it took me 15 minutes to take the exam. This last go around, it took me an hour. I still scored in the 90s, but it was definitely harder. But hey, at least its good for 5 years now.
Also, I didn't get any memory aid questions. I was refunded my $75. My theory is the FAA decided people were "cheating" with all these test prep programs and started changing/adding questions much more frequently. All that being said, Sheppard Air is still necessary to do well on the ATM. |
The only one that I have ever heard recommended is Shepard.
Just curious - where are you headed for the ATP CTP? |

I just took the ATP written last Saturday. Used Sheppard Air. They tell you upfront that the FAA has made large-scale changes to the test database and they are struggling to catch up since the FAA doesn't release the questions, they have to depend on customers to help them out. I also would say 20% of my questions were brand new. Some were completely reworded but similar to what I've seen, and some were totally new. Still, even with a week and a half of solid study with Sheppard (including my free time while at CAE at DFW), I scored a 96%.
I came from a CFI background and I found the ATP-CTP course good for me. There were some folks bored to tears as well and well, I guess to each their own. The sim time alone was super valuable. But, again, we all have different paths to a common goal. Interestingly enough, I had a Canadian Falcon 50 captain in my class who needed a US ATP. By far and away the most experienced in the class tens of times over. He told me on the last day he'd really enjoyed the class and even he had taken a good deal away from it. It's all how you approach it. I'm glad to have had the experience with my background. |
