Everyone's idea of the "best" schedule or QOL is different. As a commuter, I hate not getting used on reserve. Being on a short leash away from home living out of a crashpad sucks if you are not getting flown. Most new hires hate not getting used too, they want to fly and possibly break guarantee. Many of the CAs who live in base love not getting called, they are ok with making guarantee on CA pay. They have a bag packed and dont stray too far from home, but they live their lives until the phone rings. 20+ nights at home when they dont get used is right up their alley.

The thing with reserve is, no matter what you want - you are gonna get what the company wants. You have very little control over where, when, how much or how often you fly.

As others have said, living in/out of base might be the biggest single factor in determining your QOL. On reserve it is night and day. As a lineholder, even the easiest commute by air adds a bunch of challenges to your life on a weekly basis. If you are considering commuting - do you have some other factors that are a important enough to overcome all the suck that it brings into your life?? Family, kids, schools, etc can definitely decide for you. If the benefit overcomes the cost, do it.

Caveat emptor.

Endeavor wasn't too bad with reserve. I bid it back in December and had 24 days off...only flew 8-9 hours. Back in August in September of last year I think I did 78 hours one month and 30 the next. It is hit or miss but with higher seniority you can maximize your time off.
