Ioe

I am waiting to start ioe with ExpressJet and I was wondering if anyone has any good stories about what it was like on your first trip.

Well for me, the IOE captain spent all night drinking and playing poker in the hotel casino with other captains. Welcome to the airlines!

It is always good to hear your IOE captain say, "I have not seen that before" as you fly the plane.

Let's see... my 5 day 28 hr initial FO IOE trip included (looking back at logbook)...
  • 2 RAs and 3 TAs
  • 1 Windshear event
  • 1 Deicing
  • 1 Major thunderstorm
  • 1 drunk/disruptive UAL 100K passenger that hit the captain when confronted after landing (he was subsequently pinned to the galley wall by the CA and arrested by the airport cops)
  • several very bad landings by yours truly :o
  • 1 crazy 18 hr overnight in Savannah, and a long crawl back to the hotel with the CA and I carrying the FA up the stairs from River Street :D
  • 1 confused look  from me after getting taxi instructions for the first time at ORD to 32L@T10.
  • And one very happy brand new airline FO at all times during the trip!

Have fun!

These are great threads, because each story usually tops the last one. My OE on the 747 was about a year ago, and my checkride was into Singapore. In Singapore, ATC lights up the centerline of the taxiway to lead you to your parking position...very cool.

About 10 years ago at Brand X, the check airman took the whole crew to the red light district in Paris, he wanted to show us his favorite movie theater.

His favorite movie....."Canine Love". I thought the Flt Attd was gonna toss her crew meal.

As a continuing student and a former check airman, my advice on IOE...always pick up the bar tab.

Good Luck.

My OE included 2 overnights at Hilton Head...I think. I don't remember much. ;o)

Strip poker with 2 over 50 FA's in MCO at my first IOE overnight at TWA. After 15 beers they were 22 though. Who says the elderly aren't fun.

The only question is, was she hot?

dundem 02-16-2007 09:52 AM

A four-day with a schizophrenic, metrosexual of questionable orientation whose mood changed literally by the minute- but he did buy 4 rounds of beers, which I initially thought was a test/trap.

The hardest landing that I have ever made (so far at least)- stemmed from an approach to a field that has an NDB only, at night, in haze with an MSA of 4,200' and a field elevation of 8' (sharply rising terrain in all quads except the NW) and 15KIAS shear between 300'-100'. Oh yeah, the Capt became 'incapacitated approx 20 miles from the field so your truly was operating as a single pilot.

That's meant for us check airmen right?:D

FliFast 02-16-2007 11:30 AM

Check Airmen are never meant to buy drinks while giving IOE....you didn't get the memo ????

Then it must suck to be a check airman at any regional... I'd get awfully tired of my FO treating me to an instant cup o noodles and a bottle of water from the hotel...

By my book, the Captain ALWAYS picks up the first round (at least)... but then again, I'm the captain, and don't mind buying around for a good crew or good friends. (Plus having a corporate expense account most of the time to charge back to makes it even easier!)

Yeah that's what I was getting at too. I'm usually good at knocking back a few during IOE. As long as they're old enough to drink.

Watching Naked "Twister" with the new F.A. group (yes they were females).

I don't think I'll ever forget that one. Even when I start to suffer from A.G.E.

I said BUY DRINKS, not buy my dinner !!! (Mac n cheese, cup of soup, etc.) :D
