Default Difference between LGA and EWR

I'm curious about the differences of being based at LGA versus EWR or vice versa. I live in NJ and considering which base would make more sense.

You can hold a line in LGA several months sooner than in EWR as I understand.

I was an FO in EWR until I recently upgraded. I’m a similar distance from both airports but had always stayed in EWR because I liked the flying better. It’s entirely united flying and there’s a good variety of 1-5 day trips. Though I never wanted anything more than 3 days. It was my understand that a lot of LGA flying is shuttle stuff, like DCA turns and BOS. It also seemed to be more legs in a day, where as the United stuff in EWR was mostly 2-3 legs. The United flying also takes you farther west and I liked flying to Denver and the airports we serve from there.

They basically have the same amount of flight delays, but I think LGA car traffic is far worse.

It’s been a while since I really looked at LGA stuff though, so I need confirmation on what kind of flying they do there. I can tell you EWR flying is fairly diverse and enjoyable.

As far as benefits, keep in mind we get flight benefits on all 3 carriers, regardless of who our base flies for. That’s often asked. Hopefully an LGA based pilot can come tell you how things are there.

Thanks for the replies. In your opinions, if I wanted to maximize my chances of ending my day back at base during a rotation which base would be a better option? Is it even possible to bid in a way that you end back at base?

Are you talking about overnighting in EWR while on a multi day EWR-based trip? If so it will almost never happen. They don't bid trips like that. Essentially the only way that happens is if your going in and out of EWR and an IROP causes your last outbound flight to cancel, causing you to spend the night in base.

Sorry for not explaining it correctly. I'm still learning the terminology. Let me try again...If i want to maximize my 1 day trips. Which base would be a better option, and are 1 day trips something a junior FO would have a decent chance of getting? (basically are 1 day trips popular among more senior pilots at EWR and LGA?)

The good ones are senior, like ewr-sat/aus/dfw/eyw etc. But you could get a handful of 4-5 hr credit turns. It’s definitely possible as a junior line holder. But I’ve also heard LGA has lots of day trips.

ALSO: We just completed a scheduling survey for every base that is supposed to drastically alter our trips based on people’s overall responses. We’ll see how different they are next month although I’d imagine it’ll look pretty similar.

Hi everyone, first time poster here and Republic hopeful. I am also interested the LGA/EWR scheduling difference. I live northeast of NYC, about a 2.5 hour drive from LGA, plus another 45 minutes beyond that to EWR. Traffic can of course always increase these times. I’m assuming LGA would be the better choice, but I’m also wondering if since it’s mostly shuttle flights from there, perhaps EWR lines would allow fewer driving commute days per month? If so, that could make the extra 45 minutes worth it. Is it generally the case that LGA has shorter trips than EWR? Any insight is greatly appreciated!

I truly hope most people don’t think the only LGA flying is the shuttle. That’s just not the case. There are lots of multi-day trips.

My priority with a regional airline is to get flight time. Can I fly 85 hours per month or more at Republic if I live in NYC?

How long from starting ground school until flying a full schedule? Thank you for the replies.
