I know it varies widely pilot to pilot and base to base...
With another decent pay raise coming January 1, 2020, a 5-year Captain can easily make $100,000+

28 captain vacancy awards today. 4/18/2017 is the junior award. July 1 effective date, maintaining the upgrades to 2 years 2 months.

As a newbe to all of this, how does anFO know that it is his time to upgrade and need to apply? Does he get a memo?

I'm a newbie as well, but from what I can gather, FO's just put in a bid for CA in Flica, and when the time comes, you get awarded CA. I've noticed a lot of FO's will bid for CA at every base so whichever one you can get first will happen. If you don't bid for it, you won't get it.

I look forward to comments from more experienced people on this...

That’s essentially it, but don’t bid it if you aren’t truly willing to accept it because they will only change it with extenuating circumstances.

I look at three different PDFs. CA Vacancy awards, the seniority list, and CA base vacancies. Find the most junior CA upgrade award. Go to the seniority list and subtract their seniority number from yours. Now take the average amount of CA base vaccines from the last few months. Divide the average by how many people that are in between you and the most junior CA award.
This doesn’t include training failures or FO’s that leave before upgrading, summer flying staffing lvls, sim backups , etc.

If you really want a gold star you can compare the Vacancies to the actual awards and look at the award denials in flica to see who is not bidding senior to you. That will get you a more accurate number.

Don’t forget about the total time requirement in our contract that the company is not waving. 10.G.1.b

Thank you everyone for your answers.
So long story short: where one can bid for a base, he can bid for CA base (even if it is his current base), but will only get it awarded if his time comes to upgrade and(!) base vacancy for him as CA. Is that correct?
And unless I bid for other bases, I won't get CA award for another base, only what I bid for? (Don't want to end up commuting lol)

Also, I have to be willing to do it, or don't bid for it. Makes sense.

There are also be a backfill awards for someone leaving a base that could open a spot for someone else. So even though there are certain announced vacancies, there are also backfills (based on company need).

Here's one...NEVER bid for something you don't want. Example:

A guy in my Norfolk Navy squadron was the senior 727 engineer at Piedmont (remember them?). He lived in Virginia Beach, drilled at NAS Norfolk and was senior enough to bid Norfolk overnights. He had to commute to/from CLT to start his trips but essentially, he was home every night.

Then came the USAir merger. With the first system bid, he just bid everything. He ended up getting the junior Capt. bid on the USAir system...F-28 in Syracuse. It wasn't long before he was HATING life...on reserve in SYR and not getting home very much.

Therefore: If you don't want it, don't bid it because you'll get it.
