If you would enjoy junior manning, airport standby reserve and not having union protection OO is your go to regional.

Flight time/upgrade time is probably equal. Career advancement? Yes, plan on advancing your career away from either one you choose ASAP

OO doesn’t actually have junior manning. They may call on a day off and ask if you want to work, and they call it a junior man assignment, but it’s optional. But yes, they don’t have a union, and they have some standby reserve, or “ready reserve” as they call it.

I know Skywest has ready reserve which isn’t the most fun but don’t most people get called after a few hours or so of sitting? I’ve heard a lot of horror stories of guys at overstaffed airlines sitting ready reserve all month and getting called to fly maybe once or twice.

It’s reserve, there’s no predicting it... you may have a short sit or an extended sit but either way you’ll have an “airport sit” at OO. If you absolutely must commute, then YX has better QOL. If you can somehow manage to move to a base, go with that regional!

Airport ready reserve is call last. They’ll try to use a short call reserve first. I didn’t sit ready reserve very often, but I only got called twice ever. Also, I never sat an 8 hour ready reserve period, but May of my friends have.

I appreciate the advice from both of y’all! Are there still any training delays at YX?

Also can anyone compare the amount of time off a new pilot at OO (CRJ) vs YX would get? For example weekends off or periods of 3-4 days off in a row?

We’re all governed by part 117 so you will get time off. Any airline you go to you’re going to have a bad schedule when you’re new.
