Understaffed base?

Weird question coming from a newbie here... So lets say there's a crew base that has enough FO's to cover the expected line awards, but less than half the desired number available for reserve. Many FO trainees on down the list, but because of training delays they won't be ready to fly for a few months. In this situation, do FO's from other bases get sent to fulfill the need? Also, does that mean the folks toward the top of the "still on training delay" list can expect a pretty short stint on reserve, considering how far the list will move in those few months? Asking for a friend.

We have an understaffed base right now??

Again, I’m new around here, but if I’m looking at things correctly (big “if”), the situation I described does exist. Not sure if “understaffed” is the right way to describe it, which is why I’m seeking the opinions of those who have been around longer.

In THEORY something like that COULD happen. In THEORY, someone in the air national guard could be called up during indoc, sent off on active duty orders for a year or two, and be accruing seniority all the time he/she was gone. It CAN happen, and yes, those whose training footprints are slowed by delays are still accruing seniority, but right now, Today, at Republic, it is unlikely to give you much of any advantage.

Unless you are the ANG person, anyway...

What if, hypothetically, someone who is currently on a training delay and won’t be flying until June was sitting about 7 spots away from the number of expected lines to be awarded? Wouldn’t that person have a decent chance of getting a line right out of IOE, or pretty close to it? I know the next class would have to finish training so enough people would be available to be on reserve.

Honestly, I should... er, my friend should stop speculating so much and just see how things go.

Which base are you talking?? Because 7 spots from holding a line in MCI where they give out 40 is a lot different than 7 away from a like in LGA where they give out 110. These are just made up numbers but you get the point.

But yes the theory you are getting at is correct. Summer has more flying, as in more flights scheduled by codeshares and then operated by us. So somebody who is that close now and gets off IOE in the middle of summer will likely hold a line quickly. But what happens in October- November when flying goes back down?? Things might change for that person. You dig?

Absolutely, because I’m about to speculate that two dozen FOs already lineholders at OTHER bases - all way senior to you - will incrementally decide to bid for your base and by doing so are going to keep you on Reserve for two years. Not real likely, but it certainly COULD happen. :D

lol... well hopefully those two dozen will stay where they are! I don't mind commuting, but everyone tells me commuting to reserve is pretty miserable.

Remember...we have “out of base reserve” at Republic.

This is what I was really getting at... so if one base is a little short on reserves, they’ll send people from other bases? For how long, a month at a time? Trip by trip?
